Beau Binder of El Paso, Texas, the 1998 IMCA Sprint Car Rookie of the Year, led
the final 21 laps of Saturday night's USAC Southwest Sprint Car feature at Aztec
(N.M.) Speedway. He passed Rick Ziehl on lap 10 in his Mesilla Valley
Transportation/Shoe Spring Avenger/Gibson and led the rest of the way to beat
lady driver Kaylene Verville, Mike Martin, Shon Deskins and Robert Hall, Jr.
Binder's victory vaulted him to fourth in the new series
standings going into a May 24 race at Thunder Raceway in Show Low, Ariz. Thunder
Raceway is where Verville became USAC's first female Sprint Car feature winner
last year!
Martin's finish left him as the new series point leader, two
in front of Ziehl, with Verville a close third.
Bruce St. James was Saturday night's fastest qualifier at
Aztec, but misfortune send defending series champion Mike Boat to the sidelines
with a blown engine in the 30-lap feature. Dave Burns escaped injury in a flip
during the feature.
Ziehl, who entered the Aztec race as the series leader, led
the first nine laps before slipping to sixth at the checkered flag.
