HINES YIELDS FARMER CITY REWARDS
By: Robert Mayson

FARMER CITY, IL, AUGUST 15, 2003 - Defending USAC National Sprint Car
Champion Tracy Hines led all 30 laps to win Friday's co-sanctioned race with the NAPA
Auto Parts / Auto Trader Magazines SCRA series at Farmer City Raceway.

Hines is no stranger to the SCRA or the Non-Wing World Championship (NWWC)
series.  Still, victory has not has not come easy for the man that has registered over 25 USAC sprint car wins in his career.  With five prior top-five SCRA/NWWC finishes, Hines finally put his name in the winner's column after a precision run in the Hoffman Bros. / Kroger #69 Twister.

"There's some good racers in this group.  I've run with these SCRA guys quite a bit at the end of the year and they're good clean racers," Hines stated. "When they come back this way, and I have my primary USAC car, I'm a little more competitive.  I've ran good in Andy Morales' "Tamale Wagon" out west, but we've struggled at certain tracks.  When I come out here with my "A" equipment that we run all the time, it's nice because my crew knows what I need and I'm confident what the car is going to do."

Hines definitely looked confident heading into the feature race after convincing win in the JE Pistons Dash.  With track conditions rapidly changing after the Simpson Products B-Main, both Hines and his front row partner Tony Elliott knew that getting the lead at the start would be critical.  Elliott got a good jump at the drop of the green flag and drove down to the bottom of turn one. Pushing up the banking entering turn two, Elliott left the door wide open for Hines to scoot by him for the lead along the back straight.  Elliott had
bigger problems after he slid wide off the racing surface exiting turn four.  As J.J. Yeley, Cory Kruseman and Richard Griffin chased Hines, Elliott retired to the pit area after losing a master cylinder cap.

Kruseman passed his Tony Stewart / Mopar teammate on the fourth lap and was stalking Hines when he reached lapped traffic six laps later.  Lapped traffic proved difficult for Hines early, helping Kruseman to nearly take the lead on lap 18 on the back chute.  Yeley pushed wide two circuits later allowing the Keith Kunz / Vital Express #67 Kunz to move into third.

With less than ten laps to go with Hines, Kruseman, Drake and Yeley running nose-to-tail through lapped traffic, it seemed unimaginable that those positions would not change at any point during the remainder of the race.  Hines' victory on the fast little ¼ mile track did, however, seem less in question after Charles Davis, Jr. stopped on the racing surface on lap 27 with a flat tire to bring out the only caution period of the race.

"Some of the guys weren't paying a whole lot of attention to the move-over flag.  We had to lean on one guy, but the path was clear for me for the last three laps to run by myself," Hines later said.  "I was surprised when it started laying rubber.  I thought we were really good on the cushion, and felt that we would be in really good shape unless the bottom came in.  Then once it laid rubber I knew that if we just stayed in the rubber we would survive.  We may not be the fastest, but we would survive up front."

Hines did better than just survive up front.  He prevailed, and won comfortably.  Bud Kaeding started eighth and managed to keep his Loan-City.com #29 Maxim ahead of John Scott for fifth.  Dave Darland made his first appearance of the year in Jason Goacher's car and won the KSE Products Hard Charger Award with his 18th to ninth place drive.  Damion Gardner established a new one-lap track record (12.447) in Sander Engineering Time Trials and was running near the leaders when he tangled with Mat Neeley coming down for the checkered flag, which relegated "The Demon" to a 13th place finish.
