Santa Maria, CA - July 27, 2002... J.B. Dewar/Bandit Non-Winged 360 Sprint Cars were joined by Street Stocks and CDCRA Dwarf Cars Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway. Davey Pombo, of Kerman, continued his domination of the local circuit with his third 30-lap Bandit main event victory of the season. Pombo played lapped traffic perfectly to beat Nipomo's Jimmy Thompson and Bakersfield's Derrick Hearron to the finish line. Greg Porte, of Atascadero, and point leader Gene Manhire, of Fresno, completed the top-five. Eight-lap heat race winners were: Pombo, Dick Stevens, Goleta, and Aaron Altaffer, Visalia. Hanford's Richard Harvey, Jr. set fast time of 15.033 seconds.
    Brandon Cortner, of Santa Maria, scored his third consecutive 20-lap Street Stock feature victory, extending his point lead as he looks for his second Street Stock championship (the first came in 2000). Santa Maria's Elton Shaffer battled his way to a second place finish ahead of Nipomo's Willy Oathout and Santa Maria drivers Tim Randolph and Chad Weber. Shaffer and Rick Wilkinson, of Atascadero, took first in the 8-lap heats. 
    CDCRA Dwarf Cars came to SMS for the first time this year. In the Senior division Gary Ebeling, Don Robinson, Dave Quigley, Gordon Brand, and Jim Koch were the top-five in their 20-lap main event. Ed Niedzwiecki and Robinson won 8-lap heats. In the Pro segment Bob Brown, Jr., Brent Stevens, Jim Scribelito, Loren Bradbury, and Chuck Lippert topped the 20-lap feature. Scribelito and Angel Figueroa picked up 8-lap heat wins.
    Next Saturday night J.B. Dewar/Bandit Non-Winged 360 Sprint Cars and Street Stocks will return to the Speedway for the second week in-a-row, joined by Late Model Stocks. In addition, the annual Mid-State Bank & Trust Nickel Scramble for kids under 42" tall will be held.
    Gates open at four, with qualifying at six and racing at seven. Admission prices will be: adults - $11.00, seniors (65+) - $8.00, children 6 to 12 - $3.00.
