NMRA - TQ Midgets

Perris, CA, Jul. 12 - Jimmy May led all 20-laps and won for the third time in six NMRA-TQ Midget races this season Saturday night at Perris Auto Speedway.  It was the  second ever visit by NMRA-TQ teams to the PAS.  The NMRA-TQ support race followed the SCRA sprint car feature.

May, a versatile driver of sprint cars and Midgets, wheeled the No. 2 Greg Edenholm-owned, Dennis Hart-built chassis with Hart/Honda power.  He drove one of the two Edenholm Racing Team TQs to victories in Ventura and Santa Maria during April.  Ventura County-based May jumped from 13th to tenth in 2003 NMRA driver point standings.  He did not compete in three of the six races this season.

Former TQ Midget driver Edenholm now fields two identical TQs and currently ranks second and third in car owner points.  His No. 2x car is 12 points behind NMRA 2002 car owner champion Guy Barber's No. 1 car. Edenholm's second TQ, No. 2, is 20 points behind Barber's car.  May has one victory in the No. 2x and two triumphs this year  in the No. 2 TQ.

USAC Midget and 360-sprint car veteran Scott Hansen, the NMRA main event winner at Perris June 21, again drove the Edenholm No. 2x car and finished second this time.  Car builder Dennis Hart, Todd Hunsaker (the 2002 USAC Ford Focus California champion) and Chuck West completed the top five finishers at the PAS.  Hunsaker and Hart raced to victories in a pair of eight-lap heat races.

West, the 2002 NMRA driving champion from Fresno, jumped from second to first place in driver point standings.  He has 310 points to 282 for Chris Hedge-one of four feature winners this season.  Prior point leader Walt Johnson did not compete Saturday following the death Thursday of his father Walt Johnson, Sr after a fall and coma.  The well-liked USAC official was 77 and still served as a Western States track steward.  He worked the June 28 Ford Focus race at Irwindale and his wife, Pat, was the USAC event registrar/scorer.  Walt, Jr dropped from the point lead to third position, 29 points behind West and one point behind Hedge.
