NMRA TQ Midgets

Victorville, CA, Jun. 7 - Chris Hedge realized a dream Saturday night at the quarter-mile dirt Route 66 Speedway here.  He won the first three-quarter (TQ) midget feature of his racing career in his own Hedge chassis with a Hedge Honda engine in a 25-lap NMRA-TQ Series event.

Hedge, from Camarillo, won round four of the 14-race season.  It was the second-ever visit of NMRA teams to the high desert track at the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds facility, where NMRA opened the season March 22.  He led laps three-17 and 19-25 with the support of his long-time crew/partners Al and Mike Hendrix.

A veteran of 15-years of racing quarter and TQ-midgets and speedway motorcycles, Hedge has Race Car Specialties as his sponsor.  His victory Saturday followed a pair of sevenths and a 14th place finish this season and moved Hedge from fifth to fourth in point standings.  He is only 30 digits behind the NMRA point leader.

Scott Hansen, a Simi Valley veteran of USAC Sprint Cars, Midgets and TQ Midgets, finished second in a Greg Edenholm Hart/Honda.  Dennis Hart, 42-year old TQ builder/driver and the 1987-88 USAC-TQ champion, finished third in another Edenholm Hart chassis with Hart/Honda power.  Defending NMRA-TQ champion Chuck West, from Fresno, claimed fourth and Jody Bandfield was fifth.

Rounding out the top ten in the 16-car field were point leader Walt Johnson, SCRA sprint car rookie Trevor Brillman, from Las Vegas, Kenny Wiley, Linda Taylor and Michael Bliffen.  Jake May led the first two laps before he yielded the point to Hedge.  West edged into the lead for one lap on the 18th circuit before Hedge reasserted himself and moved to the front for good.  Hedge praised his team and sponsor for their support.

Hansen and Bandfield won the pair of eight car, eight lap heat races. Johnson continues to lead driver points by 19-points over Bandfield and 22 drivers have scored points.  Defending champion Guy Barber, a former TQ driver and multiple car owner champion in USAC/NMRA, leads car owner points by 19 over owner/driver Bandfield.  Twenty owners have scored 2003 NMRA car owner points.

The next NMRA-TQ race will be held Saturday, June 21 at Perris Auto Speedway with the SCRA sprint cars.
