HOOD WINS WINGED AND UNWINGED FEATURES ON SAME CARD
by Gary Jacob

Winged 410 Sprint Cars, Unwinged Sprint Cars and Dirt Modifieds

San Felipe Pueblo, NM.....Oct 18......Rickey Hood enjoyed an incredible Saturday night at Hollywood Hills Speedway as he wrapped up his 4th straight SCOA Winged 410 sprint car championship with a feature win, but also drove an unwinged car to victory in the seson finale for the NMMRA sprint cars on the same bill. Former World of Outlaws regular Dion Hindi bounced off the crashwalls as he chased Hood to the winged win with former Washington car Gary Taylor in third. Taylor now resides in the Denver CO area. Taylor also did double duty and chased Hood to the NMMRA win. 2002 NMMRA champion Tom Ball was third and Steve Nix fell two points short in his bid to overtake veteran Bo Baker for the club title. Baker ran 7th to finish off his championship season in the Jackson Equipment mount. Hood drove Herrera Motorsports Avenger Chassis to both wins with Gibson engines. The dirt modifieds were added to the card and the $1000 to win show attracted 43 cars from throughout the state. Aztec star J J Harpole passed Jimmy Ray in heavy lapped traffic at the checkered flag for the narrow win. Bumper Jones and Scott Logston ran 3-4.

Having been unable to race when the track couldn’t get packed in on Oct 4th, SCOA returned with a 25 car turnout. They were divided into three heat races and Marty Wilcox won the first heat ahead of Jeff Slinkard and Josh Grady. The Grady team from Farmington fielded three cars and Mike Grady won heat 2 over Taylor and Bo Baker. Hindi was flying on the high line as he won heat 3 over Jason Grady and John Stroud Jr.
The dash set the starting order for the front three rows in the feature and Hindi won that event ahead of Taylor and Wilcox. Shut out in the preliminary action, Hood raced to the feature win ahead of Hindi, Taylor, Slinkard, Scott Box, Colorado’s Rich Bubak, M Grady, Stroud Jr, Jason Grady, Bud Goodwin and Baker.

NMMRA was also involved in the Oct 4th disappointing cancellation and they returned with 20 cars to close their season. Tim Jones beat Russ Gossett and Kevin Faber in heat 1 and the flying Taylor took heat 2 ahead of rookie of the year Jeff Brumfield Jr and Chris Faber. Ball was flying in heat 3 as he beat Nix and 2002 rookie of the year Kelly Denison. The Leavitt Group Dash for Cash found Nix edging out Ball for the $100 prize. The main event had a red flag when visiting Arizona driver J T Imperial flipped in turn 2. Ball took the lead on the restart and set the pace until 13th starting Hood raced past him on lap 11. Hood won ahead of Taylor, Ball, Nix, Brumfield Jr, Nick Rael, Baker and Joe Larkin Jr. Ball finished third in points ahead of Denison, C Faber and Brumfield Jr.

Despite the short notice, the dirt modifieds fielded 43 cars and enjoyed the action as the 3/8 mile clay oval was prepped by Duke City Raceway’s Chuck Jackson for the event. The four heat races advanced just the top 3 into the feature race. Debuting a sparkling new D&M Performance Chassis, B Jones won the first heat over Farmington’s Bradon Carley and Wayne Pelkey. Ray has had the best season of his dirt modified career and he won the second heat ahead of Aztec charger Jeff Davis and Duke City champion Butch Reid. Harpole had a perfect night with a win in heat 3 over Eastern New Mexico star Terry Kayser and Aztec racer Eddie Farley. Logston was strong in the recent Las Cruces three day special and he won heat 4 in front of Aztec racers Derek Neil and Ralph Klemish. The top six from a pair of B Mains rounded out the 24 car A Main and Albuquerque star Richard Johnson won the first ahead of El Paso long tow Vince Lepasti, Scott Crawford, Kevin Brown, Ron Frazier Jr and California transplant Mark McClarran. Bobby Bachechi won the second B Main ahead of Fort Sumner’s Knox Cortese, Larry Cornell, Bo Martinez in his Ford, Eastern New Mexico IMCA ace Owen Puckett and Jerry Johnston. The 24 car field did a great job in the main event with the top five very close as Harpole beat Ray at the checkered flag. B Jones ran third ahead of Logston, Johnson, K Brown and Davis.

Hollywood Hills closes it’s season on Oct 25 with the USAC wingless sprint cars. The Albuquerque late models, street stocks and hobby stocks will all race on the card also.
