MCCORMICK WINS FIRST VRA SPRINT CAR MAIN
by Gary Jacob

Unwinged 360 Sprint Cars

Perris, CA....Oct 4....Getting a rare opportunity to race on the same card as the SCRA unwinged 410 sprint cars, Richard McCormick raced from third starting to win the main event for the VRA unwinged 360 sprint cars at Perris Auto Speedway Saturday night. Earlier, McCormick had run second to Arizona visitor Charles Davis Jr in his heat race. McCormick was chased across the finish line by 10th starting Mike Kirby with Ronnie Case coming from 11th to place third ahead of 13th starter Steve Conrad. Tom Stansberry finished 6th, one spot ahead of point leader Chris Wakim. Wakim's point lead is now just 45 points over Stansberry with Oct 25 and Nov 1 races at Ventura  remaining on the 2003 season schedule. McCormick is a former USAC TQ Midget racer and his win paid $1000 with Kirby earning $750 and Case $500.

Racing as a second division to the 410 mounts, a 30 car turnout saw a rare three heat format for VRA. The top five finishers in each heat advanced into the A Main and they were joined by 7 transfers from the B Main. Jonas Reynolds beat Stansberry in heat 1 and point leader Wakim edged out Mike Knopf and Mike Whitcomb in heat 2. Davis Jr and McCormick were chased across the heat 3 finish line by Will Perkins, the previous VRA winner in Ventura. Keith Williamson won the B Main ahead of Kevin Kierce, Richard Terry, Mark Deskovick and Jayson May. Top runner Ron DiDonato was a heat race scratch and Kierce had to drive through the B Main field after missing his heat race. The busy Kirby raced two different cars for the Shoemaker team, but was 22nd in the SCRA feature. Davis Jr also raced in both classes. Knopf, Stansberry, McCormick, Reynolds, Davis Jr and Wakim made up the front three rows for the 22 car A Main. McCormick raced to the win ahead of Kirby, Case, Conrad, Knopf, Stansberry, Wakim, Luis Espinoza, Jesse Denome, Terry and May.

The teams get a couple weekends off before the back to back Ventura races to end their schedule. Knopf is third in points ahead of Kierce, Espinoza and absent Rob Kershaw and Greg Taylor.
