TWO STRAIGHT WINS FOR ALTAFFER IN BANDIT SPRINT ACTION
 by Gary Jacob

Unwinged 360 Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds and Hot Stocks

August 10.......Having won the Santa Maria Speedway feature the previous weekend, young Aaron Altaffer from Tulare won the 30 lap Bandit unwinged 360 sprint car feature Saturday night at Kings Speedway. With the win, Altaffer climbed into third in points as Jerome Warmerdam ran second over Derrick Hearron. San Jose's Joe Chapman won the 20 lap IMCA Modified feature for his first 2002 season win at the 3/8 mile clay oval. Paul Stone ran second and Rodney Freitas used a third place finish to extend his point lead to 3 points over fifth place finisher Brian Cass. The last of the 13 hot stocks to arrive at the track, Steve Stone Sr followed a strong run at the previous race with wins in both his heat and the feature. Dave Bush had the highlight run of a very disappointing season with a second ahead of Claudine Contente. The track announced that they would be dark on August 17 due to a date conflict with the fairgrounds use.

The 24 unwinged sprint cars were paced in time trials by point leader Gene Manhire with a 16.075 lap. Dick Stevens surprised with second quick time of 16.124 and Greg Porte ran a 16.142 lap. Altaffer was fourth at 16.322 and Richard Harvey Jr ripped off a 16.345 lap. Josh Davis beat Manhire and car builder Harvey in heat 1. Danny Sheridan returned to Bandit action with a win in heat 2 over John Burnett and Stevens. Mike Knopf won heat 3 with the Santa Maria veteran trailed by Wade Griest and Porte. Hearron beat Altaffer in heat 4 with Davey Pombo Jr third. Darren Simas broke in the heat action to end his night with 23 cars contesting the 30 lapper. Altaffer won with Warmerdam second over Hearron, Manhire and Porte. Having missed his heat race, 16 year old Ventura Raceway rookie of the year candidate Alan Ballard ran sixth in the feature race. The Bakersfield based driver was trailed by Stevens, Knopf, Jason Yount and Jonathan Logan. Manhire stretched his point lead to 47 over Harvey and 101 ahead of Altaffer. Altaffer is just 3 points ahead of Stevens.

Even with the addition of Merced Speedway faithful Troy Stone, the IMCA Modifieds had just a 15 car turnout. P Stone won heat 1 over Freitas and Bryan Burnes. Tom Stidham won heat 2 with Lonnie Lacy Jr second over Cass. The Watsonville based Lacy was a feature scratch and previous week winner Gerard Filipe was also done after the heat action. Chapman won the feature with P Stone second over Freitas, Burnes, Cass, Jimmy Reeves, Marcus Aue and Bob Dias. With his second place run, P Stone is now just 25 points out of first place and 16 points ahead of Burnes.

The 13 hot stocks were divided into two heat races. Ron D'Artenay won the first with Tony Contente second. Stone beat Bush in heat 2 with female racer Claudine Contente third. Stone raced to a feature win ahead of Bush, C Contente, D'Artenay, J T Contente, Paul Pelletier, Frank Molthen and T Contente. J T Contente cut Pelletier's point lead to just 4 points with C Contente only 15 points of the point lead. D'Artenay is just 3 points back of C Contente.
