Unwinged Sprint Cars, Dirt Modifieds, Street Stocks and Hobby Stocks

Albuquerque, NM.........April 27....The second weekend of racing for the 2002 season at Duke City Raceway saw the unwinged sprint cars opening their campaign. Joe Larkin Jr beat Tom Ball and Rick Johnson in that feature race Saturday night. The dirt modified action saw four cars from the Las Cruces-El Paso area making the tow north as their Saturday night racing at home was one week away. They dominated the race, taking three of the top four spots with point leader Richard Johnson holding his own in 3rd. Curt Barnett won this race with Royal Jones second ahead of Johnson and Bumper Jones. Jay Pape won his second straight street stock feature with Tom Winters second over Clay Mosely. Ronnie Bell also became a two time winner for 2002 when he won the full field hobby stock main event ahead of Ronnie Leathem Jr and Steve Bonesteel Jr.

        With the four visitors from the south and the Yazzie family from Aztec returning again, the dirt modifieds had an 18 car turnout. In their feature race, C Barnett won over Las Cruces promoter R Jones, his son B Jones, Andrew Frazier, Toby Herring, Tyronne Yazzie, Bo Martinez' Ford, John Tanner and Taylor Yazzie. The unwinged sprint cars had 21 cars in their main event. Larkin Jr won in front of Ball, Johnson, Steve Nix, Larry Stoerkel, Anthony Tafoya and Miles Merritt. The top ten was rounded out by Jeff Brumfield, Chris Faber and David Burns.

        There were 12 street stocks in their main event. Pape, Winters and Mosely were chased to the feature checkered flag by Grants' racer Joe Smithberger, defending champion Jim Willis, returning racer Stew Bailey, Andy Tanner and Ronette Ford. The hobby stocks had 22 cars in their feature with Bell winning ahead of Leathem Jr, Bonesteel Jr, Jeff Whyman, Phil York, Jerry Frazier, Juan Dorcas and Shane Kapinski.
