TAYLOR CELEBRATES 19TH BIRTHDAY WITH WIN
by Gary Jacob

Unwinged 360 Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds and Street Stocks

Ventura, CA -June 9, 2001--Celebrating his 19th birthday in grand style, Greg Taylor won the 30 lap VRA Unwinged 360 sprint car feature from the pole Saturday night at Ventura Raceway. John Wright ran second with point leader Gary Howard in third. Taylor won $1,000, Wright $750 and Howard $500. Taylor is the son of former track champion Rick Taylor. Added to the schedule to make up an earlier rainout, the IMCA Modified feature saw Steve Greenland win over point leader Mike Furlong. Defending street stock champion Craig Germanetti is slowly climbing in the point standings following his feature win in front of Greg Raap and point leader Bradley Prows.

A great turnout of 36 unwinged sprint forced four large qualifying heats. Wright won the first over Bill Welch, Taylor took heat 2 over Jim Thomson, Richard McCormick nipped point leader Howard in heat 3 and Clark Templeman III won heat 4 ahead of Jimmy Crawford. The top four finishers in each heat advanced into the 30 lap A Main and the large field saw the track elect to run two smaller B Mains, each advancing two cars. Ronnie Case won the first B Main over Steve Stasa. Tony Dighera beat Luis Espinoza in the second B Main. Last week, the sprint car feature went 28 laps without a yellow flag. This week, it took numerous attempts to get a single lap scored. Chris Wakim was qualified for the A Main, but coudn't get his car to fire and he was replaced by alternate Kenny Brown. Most recent Senior Sprint winner Dayle Henry broke an engine. On a restart, Templeman and McCormick tangled. McCormick had suspension damage and pitted, but another caution for a spinning Bob Moody who was hit by Case, Stasa and Mike Davis allowed McCormick to make repairs and return before a lap was scored. Templeman eventually dropped out running and Marc Hart was another dropout to leave just 12 car circulating at the checkered flag. After Taylor had won his heat race from the pole, the inversion pill that he drew put him again on the pole for the main event. He won over third starter Wright, 8th starter Howard, fifth starter Crawford and 15th starter Case. Josh Ford was sixth over Jim Thomson, Jeff Heaton, Luis Espinoza and McCormick. Howard's point lead is 625 ahead of Taylor with McCormick 1140 points back. It was Taylor's 3rd win of the 2001 season.

The IMCA Modified car count fell to 13 for the fill in date. Greenland had a perfect night as he also won the first heat over Ed Shelton. Rookie Mark Fullerton won heat 2 over Gary Curtis. Greenland took the main event ahead of Furlong, Randy McGraw, Fullerton, John Aitken, Shelton, Chris Tonoli and Brett Lynsky. Furlong's point lead is 14 over McGraw and 22 ahead of Donald Houghton, who was 10th. There were 15 street stocks and Raap won the first heat over Ernie Malone. Chris Tramel took heat 2 with Paul Moore second. Germanetti had run 4th in his heat, but won the feature ahead of Raap, Prows, Tramel, Malone, Will Smith, John Hard and Paul Jankovskis. Prows has built a 90 point lead over Moore, who ran 12th. Raap is 25 behind Moore and 25 ahead of both Stephen Suchowirsky and Wayne Heurung. Germanetti is buried in 6th place, but just 40 points back of Raap.
