by Gary Jacob

Unwinged 360 Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds, VRA Modifieds and Pony Stocks

Ventura, CA -June 2, 2001--Beating Richard McCormick on a lap 29 restart and leading the final two laps, 18 year old Greg Taylor won his second 30 lap VRA Unwinged 360 Sprint Car feature of the 2001 season Saturday night at Ventura Raceway. McCormick was scored the $750 second in a photo finish with Jeff Heaton, who won $500. Point leader Gary Howard battled back to a fifth place finish. Former track Donald Houghton won his second 20 lap IMCA Modified main event with another former champion Randy McGraw in second. McGraw now leads Houghton by just one point in their duel for second in track points. Marty Desbrow is just fourth in points in the VRA Modifieds, but his Saturday night win was his third of the season. Point leader George Kreider IV was third. Making a rare appearance, Darren Gunnell won the pony stock 20 lap feature with James Brown disqualified from his feature finish for a second straight week.

The unwinged 360 sprint cars drew a 28 car field. Jim Thomsen beat Heaton in heat 1, John Wright and Luis Espinoza were 1-2 in heat 2, Chris Wakim beat McCormick in heat 3 and Taylor beat point leader Howard in heat 4. Rob Kershaw had a serious flip in the heat action, but he was unhurt. Four cars transfer out of each heat and they are joined by four more transfers from the B Main. Steve Chuhaloff won the B Main over Mark Weitzman and Russell DeBlauw. The lineup for the 30 lap A Main put Heaton, McCormick, Taylor and Howard in the front two rows. Heaton led early over McCormick, Howard and Taylor. Howard jumped the cushion and slapped the wall in turn 1, losing several spots. McCormick got around Heaton for the top spot and was leading when the only yellow flag came on lap 28 for a tangle between Chris Wakim and John Wright. Taylor beat McCormick on the start and won. Heaton ran third ahead of Jimmy Crawford with Howard battling his way back to fifth. Wright was sixth over Tony Dighera and Thomson. Howard's point lead is now 730 over Taylor, who has moved 65 ahead of McCormick.

The IMCA Modifieds had a 20 car field and Ed Shelton beat Chris Tonoli in heat 1. Steve Greenland won heat 2 over Rich Wolfe. Houghton beat point leader and defending champion Mike Furlong in heat 3. Houghton then won the main event ahead of McGraw, who had to battle his way from behind the inversion. Shelton ran a season best third over rookie Mark Fullerton, Tonoli, Furlong, Daman Redman, John Aitken and Wolfe. Furlong now holds a 13 point lead over McGraw, who is just a single point ahead of Houghton. Aitken is fourth in points ahead of Steve Smith. The VRA Modifieds had an 11 car turnout and Desbrow beat Kreider and Rick Rodarte in heat 1. Joe Henderson beat Marty McLaughlin in heat 2. Desbrow won the main ahead of Rodarte, Kreider, Henderson, McLaughlin and Mark Gallimore. Kreider has built a 60 point lead over Henderson, who is 85 ahead of Rodarte.

The pony stocks again filled the pit area with 29 cars. Mike Frazier, Gunnell, Chris Tramel and James Brown won heat races. Four cars transfer from each heat and Tom Burroughs won the B Main over Dave Revard and Steve Klingberg. Brown was disqualified from his feature finish for a second straight race and Gunnell beat point leader Bryan Rungaitis, Scott Bulpitt, Frazier, Jody Davis, Dave Revard and Tramel. B Rungaitis holds a big 290 point lead over Burroughs. Frazier is 70 back of Burroughs and just five ahead of Davis.
