KRUSEMAN TRIES VENTURA AND WINS
by Gary Jacob

Unwinged 360 Sprint Cars, Street Stocks, I-4 Modifieds and Pony Stocks

Ventura, CA -October 7, 2000--Usual SCRA unwinged 410 sprint car regular Cory Kruseman borrowed Bill Camarillo's car and give Ventura Raceway a try Saturday night. He drove to wins in both his heat race and the 30 lap feature for the VRA unwinged 360 sprint cars for a $1,000 payday. Greg Taylor gave Kruseman everything that he could handle for a $750 second and Jimmy Crawford won $500 for his third place finish. The greatly improved Greg Raap picked off his first ever street stock feature win and has climbed into 7th in track points. Defending champion Craig Germanetti ran second to again take the track point lead from John Uccellini. Despite winning five I-4 Modified main events, Marty Desbrow still trails point leader George Kreider IV by 90 points as Kreider ran second this week. The pony stock track title fight will certainly go right down to the wire as Ray Martinez gained his first win of the season in their 20 lap main and trails point leader Mark Gallimore by just 5 points as Gallimore ran third behind Darren Gunnell.

The unwinged 360 sprint car action again drew nearly a 30 car field. They were split into four qualifying heats with the top four finishers in each advancing into the 30 lap A Main. Kruseman, who has a sprint car driving school at the small 1/4 mile clay oval. won the first heat over Tony Dighera. Point leader Gary Howard won heat 2 with John Wright second. Point runnerup Chris Wakim took the third heat over Richard McCormick. Jimmy Crawford won heat four over Ronnie Case. The final four transfers came out of the B Main where Bob Moody won over Jim Porter and Dale Harwood. The car that Kruseman drove to his wins in an older non-downtube style car that arrived on an open trailer. Kruseman was on the pole for the 30 lapper with Wakim alongside. Kruseman charged into the lead, but Wakim stayed right on his rear nerf for the first 8 laps with Crawford in third. The first of many cautions appeared on lap 8 when Jim Gresham spun. Gresham again spun on the next lap to end his night under the two caution rule. On lap 11, Case bicycled in turn 4 and slammed into the wall. He left on a hook, but later returned to the race. As they came down for the next green flag, Wakim rode over the left rear tire on Kruseman and this caused a multi-car tangle that also involved Howard, McCormick and Bill Welch, eliminating Jeff Heaton. Kruseman now led Wakim, Crawford and Taylor. With everyone else racing the top groove, Taylor charged into the bottom groove and quickly climbed to 2nd. Kruseman saw Taylor's charge and moved down. They made contact twice. It appeared that Kruseman would spin with the first contact, but the second straightened him out. Taylor did get by for the lead, but a spin by a midpack runner brought out a yellow and nullified the pass. The next restart saw an exciting side by side duel between Kruseman and Taylor before Kruseman again pulled ahead. Wakim jumped the cushion in turn 4 and lost third to Crawford. Wakim ran fourth and Howard charged back from the rear to place fifth ahead of Rob Kershaw, Wright, Dighera and Welch. Howard's point lead is 195 points over Wakim, who is 220 ahead of Taylor. Heaton fell 475 points out of the lead with his 18th place run.

There were 16 street stocks and Randy Miller won the first heat over Steve Suchowirsky. Raap had a perfect night as he won his heat ahead of Tom Stephens. Just four laps into the 20 lap main, Stephens, Steve Bulpitt and John Uccellini tangled. Stephens' car was heavily damaged and Bulpitt was also forced out. Raap picked off the win but Germanetti was right behind as Suchowirsky placed third ahead of Miller, Wayne Heurung, Dan Murphy and Mike Riccardi. Germanetti's point lead is just 60 points over Uccellini with Heurung third, 200 points behind Uccellini. Heurung is just 5 points ahead of Riccardi and 40 ahead of Stephens. There were 11 I-4 Modifieds with double division racer Chris Tramel winning heat 1 over David Rhodes. Mark Joe and Desbrow ran 1-2 in heat 2. Tramel threw a belt with just five laps to go in the main event and he faded to a third behind Desbrow and Kreider. It was Desbrow's second straight win. Joe ran fourth over Rhodes, Steve Chuhaloff and Dino Delao. Kreider's point lead is 90 over Desbrow, who is 175 ahead of Joe. Joe leads Chuhaloff by just 30 points.

The pony stocks again had a larger car count than the sprint cars with 29 cars racing. Julie Masters won heat 1 over Mike Frazier. Rick Rodarte beat Tramel in heat 2 and Jon Everhart took heat 3 in front of Ray Martinez. Gary Yeates and Dave Revard were 1-2 in heat 4. The final four transfers came out of the B Main where Jack Fullerton beat Paul Jankovskis and Garret Pegler. Martinez lined up in the 7th row for their 20 lap A Main and had nearly climbed to the lead in just 7 laps. Darren Gunnell ran second ahead of point leader Gallimore, Frank Woodward, Jankovskis, Bryan Rungaitis and Cliff Ashlock.

While Gallimore only leads Martinez by five points, Rungaitis is just 55 points back and 115 ahead of Wes Richardson.
