Bud Kaeding looks to rebound with busy week ahead
By Gary Thomas

Campbell, CA – May 18, 2009…Two-time USAC Silver Crown champion Bud Kaeding will look to regroup this coming week following a tough weekend that was filled with a blown engine on Friday night and final lap crash on Saturday.

Kaeding went into Friday's event at the Ocean Speedway sitting just one point out of the lead in the track standings and got the night off to a great start as he set fast-time, but in the heat race things went sour as the engine in the Sala/Matherly Racing No. 19 blew up and put an end to the event.

The Campbell veteran then headed to Hanford to compete for Sala Racing on Saturday in a USAC Western States Midget race. Last season at the Kings Speedway Kaeding was very quick in a pair of midget starts and that trend continued on Saturday. A total of 27 midgets showed up for action and he kicked off the night by qualifying sixth quick and then scoring fourth in his heat race.

The main event was an up down affair as Kaeding fought into the top five early on, but got spun around on the second lap forcing the Sala Racing, Weldway Construction, M&M Powder Coating No. 79 to restart from the rear of the field. Kaeding then came forward very nicely through the remainder of the feature and was up to the top five when he got upside down on the final lap and was offcialy placed 11th in the rundown.

Terre Haute, Hoosier Hundred & Calistoga on tap this week-

This week will find Kaeding get his racing fix in a few different forms of dirt track racing as Memorial Day weekend has already come upon us. On Thursday night he will take to the Terre Haute Action Track to compete in the USAC National Sprint Car Series sanctioned Tony Hullman Classic. Kaeding brought home a seventh place finish in his one and only USAC National Sprint start this season and he'll look for another solid run at the fast half-mile dirt oval on Thursday.

On Friday evening Kaeding will bring his USAC Silver Crown Series point lead into the Indiana State Fairgrounds for the running of the prestigious Hoosier Hundred, an event he's competed in four times and has never finished worse than third. After winning the Silver Crown season opener at Manzanita he currently sits in a tie with Jesee Hockett atop the series standings and will look to put the BK Motorsports, K&N Filters, MPD Racing Products No. 29 towards the front of the field at the big mile on Friday.

Following those events Kaeding will fly back to California and compete in the Golden State Challenge Sprint Car Series return to the Calistoga Speedway on Saturday and Sunday nights. In 1999 the Campbell driver won the Calistoga track title, but is still searching for his first win at the half-mile. "I've been close before and have run second a few times and definitely want to get my name on the Calistoga win list," Kaeding said. "It's a historic track out here and the winners list has some pretty big names on it."

Last season Kaeding competed in a pair of Civil War 360 Series events at the Napa County Fairgrounds track, with the highlight being a charge from dead-last to eighth in the short 20 lap feature during the August stop. This weekend's double-header will be the first time that the GSC 410 Sprint Car Series has competed at Calistoga in two years and the first time winged 410 sprint cars have been there since August of '07. Kaeding will go into the event sitting 10th in the GSC standings, having made five of the seven races so far this season.
