DAVID CARDEY WINS USAC/CRA MAIN EVENT AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY!
(APRIL 27, 2009, RIVERSIDE, CA) “Dynamite” David Cardey beat 21 other top sprint car drivers to notch his first Lucas Oil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series win of the 2009 season at Perris Auto Speedway on Saturday, April 25th. The victory was Cardey’s fourth ever in the series and his first since last October.

A strong 39-car field filled the pits to start the evening and Cardey was one of the favorites before the car came out of the hauler. With his four-month old son Drake James watching for the third time, Cardey qualified sixth fastest in his ITI Performance Viper Chassis powered by an ITI Performance Racing Engine. That fast lap placed “Dynamite” inside the fourth row of the second heat race. Starting next to him was second fast qualifier of the night, “The Bullet” Blake Miller.

Cardey and Miller put on a fantastic show in the heat race. They passed the six cars that started in the three rows in front of them and then put on a crowd pleasing, aggressive race for the top spot in the ten-lapper. When the Eddie Ramirez checkered flag brought an end to the heat, Cardey’s bright red #38 was a close second behind Miller.

After spending the intermission in the grandstands collecting money for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, Cardey took his spot for the start of the 30-lap main event. This time he started inside the third row.

When the green flag dropped to start the A main, Cardey set his sights toward the top spot and it did not take him long to get there. He had advanced from his fifth starting spot to second by the end of lap four. On lap nine, Cardey muscled his way into the lead, but he had to do it twice as the yellow flag halted the proceedings. Once the green signaled the drivers to hit the loud pedal again, Cardey quickly took the lead as the pack blasted into turn one on the restart.

Once out front, Cardey pummeled the field and built up a commanding 5.2 second lead. However, a late race yellow flag made the closing laps of the race anything but easy for Riverside, California based driver. And, just like in the heat race, Miller was the driver giving Cardey fits at the end. Cardey’s seemingly insurmountable lead was nothing but a memory when the field took the last green flag of the night. Miller, who like Cardey was looking for his first win of the year, passed “Dynamite” for the lead on lap 29! But, on this night, David Cardey would not be denied. On the last lap he raced inside Miller on the back straightway and then held the 22 year-old at bay coming off the last turn for a thrilling main event win. At the end Cardey’s margin of victory was 0.319. All told, he led 21 of the 30 laps.

After getting out of the car and accepting the accolades of the crowd, the popular driver smiled and told the appreciative fans and infield announcer Chris Holt, “We needed this one bad and we were due. I knew Miller was tough and saw him next to me on the restart. I knew I had to step. This has been a long time coming.”

The win propelled Cardey to second in Lucas Oil USAC/CRA Series championship standings. And, he is only 16 points behind leader Mike Spencer. Cardey’s hunt for the championship will continue when the next race in the series takes place at King’s Speedway in Hanford, California on May 16th.
