Herrera & Reid Sweep at Hollywood Hills Speedway ( AGAIN )
by Bob Ingram / Beth Hazlewood

8-02-2008 --- Hollywood Hills Speedway @ Casino Hollywood, San Felipe Pueblo New Mexico. After three weeks of fighting rainstorms and losing one race night due to weather, Hollywood Hills Speedway saw near perfect weather and great track conditions. There were 96 cars on hand in five divisions that saw some great side by side action and several very close races that were not decided until the last few feet of the race. As has become their habit, Sprint car driver Johnny Herrera and Modified driver Butch Reid took wins in both their heat races and their main events for the second outing in a row. Reid has also had a four-win night as he also races in the Late Model division and has taken heat and man wins in both divisions in one night. Reid is currently the season point’s leader in both of these divisions.

The Sprints had 21 cars to run 3 heats and a fantastic 25 lap main event. Heat #1 saw the #45X of Johnny Herrera take the win over the #40X of Scott Box with the #22B of Jessie Baker in 3rd. Box was making a come back after rolling his ride for the second time this year a couple of weeks ago. Heat #2 was probably the best race of the night as the #27 of California Stuntman Shawn Kautz battled last years Sprint Champion #61X Bo Baker from the drop of the green until the checkers flew. These two drivers swapped the lead several times on nearly every lap with Kautz finally holding on for a very narrow victory over Baker. The battle for 3rd spot was nearly as close as the fight for 1st, with the #11W of Tim West and the #4X of 17 year old rookie Cody Mansfield also running side by side and changing position on almost every lap. In the end West was able to hold off Mansfield for the 3rd spot. Heat #3 saw the #78 of Jody Williams hold off the very determined #7 of Jason Tanner with the #65 of unsponsered driver Rick Johnson coming home in 3rd. The 25 lap main event was one of the best all year as the battle at the front was among 8-10 cars all race long. Jody Williams in the #78 jumped out to the early lead with a gaggle of cars in hot pursuit, but Williams spun early and was not able to get back into the hunt for the win. The Father & Son duo of Bo & Jessie Baker waged a family feud for 15 laps with each taking turns at the point. While the Baker’s were having their own personal battle the #45X of Johnny Herrera was working his way up from his 11th starting spot. Once Herrera caught the Baker boys it took a few lap of running high then low before he was able to get by, but once he made the pass for the lead he ran off and hid, taking the win by a sizeable margin. Chasing Herrera home were Jessie and Bo Baker followed by the #11w of Tim West with the #8 of J.C. Powell making a very good run in the fifth position.

As has been the case all year the Modifieds had the largest field of the night with 30 cars to run 4 heats, a semi main and a 25 lap main event. Heat #1 had the #25 of Bo Martinez take the win over visiting El Paso driver #82 Sherman Barnett with the #00 of J.R. Bonesteel taking the 3rd position. Youngster Barnett turned a very racy 73 last Thursday and is a threat to win every time he takes to the track. Heat #2 saw current points leader #5 Butch Reid take the win over the very fast #21 of James Hodgdon with the #45X of Todd Budlong coming home in 3rd. Budlong who had taken a few years off from racing to concentrate on his Motorsports business has been improving rapidly and has been running up front the last couple of weeks. Look for Budlong to be in the hunt for a main event win in the near future. Heat #3 saw ex-asphalt racer #3J Josh Cain take a very hard fought victory over another El Paso driver in the #44 of Christy Georges with the #68 of Kenny Wheeler filling out the top 3 spots. Heat #4 saw the #77X of Colt Treharn take the win over the #2M of Richard Johnson with the #151 of Russell Harvey taking the show position. Treharn is running a full schedule of Winged Sprint Car racing this year with the Rocky Mountain Division of the ASCS and is currently in 6th place in that divisions point standing. Leading the ASCS Rocky Mountain series is another local driver Derrik Ortega. Both of these drivers plus many of our local Non-Winged Sprinters will be in action at HHS on the 15th & 16th of August. The 15-lap semi main had 16 cars vying for 12 transfer positions. After 15 hard fought laps there were only 13 cars still running which left only the #99 of Jessie Lynch missing the main event. Lynch drove in the Cruiser division last year and the early part of this year before moving up to the Modified division and has been doing a very good job, coming up just a few feet short of making tonight’s main event. At the checkered it was the #54 of Shawn Dutcher over the #13 of Luigi Truden and the #88J of Mark McClarran taking home the 3rd position. The 25 lap main event was a thriller from the very first lap with several cars running three wide fighting for the top spot. Josh Cain and J.R. Bonesteel had the early lead but were soon overhauled by the #25 of Bo Martinez, #44 Christy Georges and the #5 of Butch Reid. Once Reid took the lead he was able to pull out to a sizeable lead and left Martinez and Georges to battle each other in their attempt to run him down. Although Martinez and Georges were not able to get close enough to give Reid a battle for the win they had a GREAT battle for the second spot for the last 10 laps of the race. In the end Reid took the win with Martinez taking 2nd by less that a foot at the flagstand over Georges with the #88J of Mark McClarran who had come through the semi main taking home 4th and the #77X of Colt Treharn filling out the top five spots.

The Hobby Stocks had 19 cars to run two heats and a 15 lap main event. Heat #1 had Gallup N.M. racer Dale Lovato in the #12X take the win over the #75 of Kenny Ford with the #66 of Paul Jenicek coming home in 3rd. Unfortunately for Lovato he motor problems on the last lap and was not able to make the main event and got an early start on his tow home to Gallup. Heat #2 had a very close battle for the win with the #24 of Junior Bustillos holding on for the win over the #7T of Thomas Hayes with the #23 of Randall Trujillo taking 3rd place. Trujillo was a late arrival at the track and had to start the race from the lost starting spot. The main event was scheduled for 20 laps but a couple of crashes on the initial starts eliminated several cars, causing the race to be cut to 15 laps. After a great run from his last row starting spot, 70 year old Phil York in the #1 car took the win over the #86 of Dan Harmon with the #23 of Trujillo, #75 Ford and the #7T of Hayes filling out the top five spots in a very action packed event.

The Mini-Sprints had a fairly short field of 13 cars to run 2 heats and a 20 lap main event. Heat #1 had the #68 of Brian Perea take the win over the #44 of James Hatch with the #8 of Chris Perea coming home in third spot. Hatch, who had taken his first main event win earlier in the year was celebrating his 17th birthday today. Heat #2 had the #95 of Aaron Wheeler taking the win over the #9X of Eric Smith with the #23W of Adam Mollenkopf taking home third place honors. The 20 lap main event had only 12 starters as the #66 of Lonnie Saiz was not able to make the call. The top 4 cars in this race waged a heated battle the entire race before the #9X of Eric Smith took the win in front of the #68 of Perea, #23W Mollenkopf, #2 David Gay and the #91 of Clint Miller filling out the top five spots.

Like the Mini-Sprints the Dwarf Cars also had 13 cars on hand to run 2 heats and a 15 lap main event. This was the Dwarf’s second appearance at HHS this year and they are very popular with the fans, especially the youngsters. The car count was down a little due to several of the regular drivers racing in Arizona this weekend but should be back when the Dwarf’s return for round 3 on the 15th & 16th of August. Heat #1 had the #X1 of J.C. Gilleland taking the win over the #u& of Brock Bagwell with the #19 of Randy Haugen taking home the 3rd spot. Heat #2 had another Gilleland #17 Ryan taking the win over the #11M of Justin Smith with the #42 of Ren Johnsen coming home in 3rd. The main event was a race long duel between the Gillelands with the #17 of Ryan taking the win over the #X1 of J.C. These two drivers swapped the lead several times on nearly every lap with Ryan finally pulling away slightly at the end. Chasing the Gillelands to the stripe were the #42 of Johnsen, #11M Smith with the #19 of Haugen filling out the top five spots.

All in all a great night of racing at Hollywood Hills Speedway. Be sure to come out next Saturday when the Late Models return to action. There are a couple of new cars ready to make their debuts in the Late Models so we should see 17-20 of these extremely fast racecars in action. Joining the Late Models will be the Hobby Stocks, Mini-Sprints and Cruisers.

Have A Great Day
God Bless Everybody
