Silver Dollar Speedway Hosts July 4th Festivities
Two Nights of Racing over the July 4th Weekend
by Troy Hennig

(Chico, CA 6-29-08)...Come celebrate the July 4th weekend with racing and fireworks at the Silver Dollar Speedway on Friday and Saturday night. On Friday night, July 4th, the Feather Falls Casino point season continues with three divisions racing. The 410 sprints, dirt modifieds and wingless sprints all race during points race #14. Chico Mobile AC & Radiator will help sponsor the night and offer extra money so the 410 sprints can run for their $2,000 payday. Ashley Furniture is also a co-sponsor of the night and they will offer a free bed to be raffled off during one of the night's intermissions. Once the racing is over the fireworks will start. Traditionally the races end around 9:30 pm and the fireworks will follow once the final checkered flag is waived.

Saturday will feature the powerful 410 winged sprint cars of the traveling Golden State Challenge King of California Series and a points race for the wingless sprints. It will mark race number 17 for the King of California Series.

The fun starts early at the race track. On July 4th, the front grandstand gate will open at 4:00 pm. Racing is scheduled to start at 5:30 pm. Adult general admission is $14.00, $10.00 and children 11 and under are free. Fans can buy the July 4th tickets at Ashley Furniture, Chico Mobile AC & Radiator, Withrow's Motorsports, The Country Touch in Paradise and Napa Auto Parts in Orland or at the front ticket box on July 4th at the speedway.

Saturday night front gate will open at 5:00 pm with racing to kick off around 6:30 pm. Adult general admission is $16.00, Juniors $11.00 and children $5.00.

With the fires still the focal point around the surrounding area's, the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds is still being used as a home to the fire fighters. As with last Friday, the only entrance into the grandstands and pit area will be through the back gate located on Silver Dollar Way. The road is to the side of Costco and off of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway. Both fans and drivers need to enter through that side of the fairgrounds. There is parking available at both the back parking lot or in the Coscto area. John Padjen Motorsports is sorry for some of the inconvenience to our fans but has arranged a free shuttle to pick up fans and bring them to the main grandstand entrance. We know all of us understand the importance of the great work the fire fighters are doing and we are both working together to allow the races to take place. There will also be no camping allowed anywhere on the fairgrounds for race fans during the July 4th weekend. Finally, no street vehicles will be allowed into the pit area on July 4th.

Andy Forsberg still leads the charge for the winged sprints. The Auburn native holds a comfortable margin over Oroville driver Sean Becker. Becker, known as the shark, is on attack mode and looking to reel in Forsberg. Mason Moore continues to hold down the third spot. Chico's Jonathan Allard will be the favorite to get the win in front of his home town crowd. Last week, Allard finished second to Andy Gregg. Allard is ready to not let that happen again. Kyle Hirst is ready to rebound after a crash took him out while running second last week. Hirst will be focused on getting a win for Gary Perkins and his #6 team. Flying in from Indiana for this weekend will be Brad Sweet. The Grass Valley resident, now living in Indianapolis, will drive the Rod Tiner #83 with Shark Racing Engines. Sweet, who drives for Kasey Kahne racing in USAC, is looking forward to racing back home during both nights of racing at Chico. Chico Volkswagen owner Mark Abouzeid is rumored to be back in his winged sprint car also this weekend.

On Saturday night, Jonathan Allard leads the King of California point standings. Allard has scored 13 top five main event finished out of 16 races. Right on his bumper is Los Angeles driver Tyler Walker. The former World of Outlaw star and NASCAR driver has settled nicely back into winged sprint car racing. Walker adds experience and enthusiasm to the local scene. Bud Kaeding, former two-time USAC Silver Crown Champion is third in points. Mike Henry is fourth in points and having an incredible season in his first full-time assault during the King of California Series. Evan Suggs rounds out the top five with consistent finishes and heat race victory's.

Chico's Richard Papenhausen leads the dirt modified charge going into Friday's point race. He leads Chico's Darin Ruley by 42-points. Ruley, to his credit, has five to ten finishes this year. Veterans Mike Sohnrey, Mark Abouzeid and Randy McDaniel round out the top five.

Keith Bloom Jr. won his fourth race of the year last Friday night to extend his lead over Taylor Simas in the points. Bloom Jr. has now won two in a row and looks unstoppable. He passed Marc Zieske on the final lap last week that thrilled the crowd. Simas and the Myer's brothers, Cody and Mason, are right there to try and stop the winning streak Bloom Jr. has gathered.
