Santa Maria Speedway September 22nd Recap

Santa Maria, CA - September 22, 2007...Century 21 Hometown Realty Bandit Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds, NMRA TQ Midgets and Factory Stocks defied mother nature Saturday night to get in a full schedule of racing at Santa Maria Speedway.

*The threat of rain didn't dampen the spirits of the two IMCA Modified drivers tied for the lead going into their championship deciding 25-lap feature event. When all was said and done, Tim Breshears, of Santa Maria, finished fifth, five positions ahead of Arroyo Grande's Chad Weber, to clinch the 2007 title by five points. Joey Claborn, of Santa Maria, scored his first Modified feature victory ahead of Danny Lauer, another Santa Maria driver who finished third in points, Nipomo's Kenny Kirkpatrick and Josh Vogt, whose fourth place finish gained the Santa Maria driver "Rookie of the Year" honors. Lauer and Ron Wiley, of Santa Maria, won 8-lap heat races.

*After three second and three fourth place finishes in the Bandit Sprint Car division Easton's Albert Pombo finally got his first career victory Saturday night. After several top-five drivers suffered mechanical problems of one type or another, it came down to a battle between Pombo and Jace VanderWeerd, in a brand new car, for the victory. Davey Pombo, Albert's cousin, was third, followed by Santa Maria's Mike Knopf and point leader Jesse Mack of Visalia. The 8-lap heat races went to Greg Porte, of Atascadero, and Richard VanderWeerd of Visalia. Davey Pombo set fast time of 14.455 seconds.

*Ventura's Randy Moody, who set fast time of 15.623 seconds, won his second consecutive 25-lap NMRA TQ Midget feature event at Santa Maria, outrunning Richard Ortega, Jr., of Camarillo, and Kenny Wiley of Sunland. Rookie Scott Niven, of Moorpark, and Scott Dobson, of Newbury Park, filled in the top-five. Eight-lap heat race winners were Moody and Ortega.

*Seven-time main event winner Dave Thompson, of Santa Maria, suffered a severe blow to his championship hopes when he was collected in a wreck early in the run and finished 20th in the 21-car field. Third place Kevin Linson, of Arroyo Grande, edged closer to point leader Kirk Morgan, of Santa Maria, with his first 20-lap feature victory of the season while Morgan was finishing fourth. Santa Maria drivers Michael Frazier and Pete Lethcoe were second and third, Doyle Graham, Jr., of Grover Beach, was fifth. Thompson and Tim Bennett, of Santa Maria captured 8-lap heat races.

*Next Saturday night Late Model Stocks, Fox 11 First at Ten/Addamo Estate Vineyards East vs. West Super Street, Factory Stocks and Mini Stocks will put on an all stock car show, and four more championships will be decided. The second "Ira's Bike Shop of Arroyo Grande Bicycle Races" for kids is also on the agenda. Tickets will cost $14.00 for adults, $10.00 for seniors (65+), $3.00 for children 6 to 12, 5 and under free. The Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange, on Hutton Road.
