Santa Maria Speedway May 26 Recap
By Jim Pluhar

Santa Maria, CA - May 26, 2007...Century 21 Hometown Realty Bandit Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Fox 11 First at Ten East vs. West Super Streets, and Factory Stocks celebrated Memorial Day with speed Saturday night at the 17th running of the Don Roberts Memorial at Santa Maria Speedway.

*Bandit pilot Davey Pombo, of Kerman, showed his intentions for the night with a fast qualifying lap of 13.750 seconds for an average speed of 87.27 miles-per-hour. Starting fourth in a 20-car field, Pombo took 25 of the 30 laps to overtake Clovis driver Peter Murphy, who looked like a sure winner, for the victory. Point leader Jesse Mack, of Viaslia, claimed third, followed by Santa Maria's Mike Knopf and Jimmy Thompson of Grover Beach. Greg Porte, of Atascadero; Albert Pombo, of Easton; and, Jason May, of Taft, all won 8-lap heat races.

*Bakersfield's Brad Pounds was the car to beat in the IMCA Modified division. Pounds captured an 8-lap heat race and then stormed his way from the ninth starting position to pass early leader Danny Lauer, of Santa Maria, on lap 17 for the lead of the 25-lap event. Lauer dropped out of the top-five while Pounds drove away for the win, with Bakersfield's Larry Hood second and Coalinga's Rich Denman third. Santa Marians Jacob Jones and Tim Breshears were fourth and fifth. Hood won the other heat race.

*Lee Jensen, of Bakersfield, repeated his feat of 2006 in the Don Roberts Memorial, by winning both the 4-lap trophy dash and the 50-lap feature event in the East vs. West Super Street Series. Jensen's victory wasn't easy as he had to battle, in turn, with second place Brady Bell, of Bakersfield, and third place Tim Randolph of Santa Maria. Tom Grzincic, of Atascadero, came home fourth and Lonnie Welch, of Bakersfield, who set fast time of 16.602 averaging just under 72 mph, fifth. Randolph, Bell, and Darrel Hood, of Bakersfield, snared the 8-lap heat races.

*Factory Stocks had a 27-car field forcing a 10-lap semi-main won by Kevin Linson of Arroyo Grande. The 20-lap feature was a runaway victory for Santa Maria's Dave Thompson who went to the point on lap 14 and drove away for the win. Nipomo's Tim Correia held on for second over Chuck Barfoot, of Pismo Beach, with point leader Kirk Morgan, of Santa Maria, fourth and Doyle Graham, Jr., of Grover Beach, fifth. The 8-lap heat races went to Thompson, Barfoot, and Chris Graham of Grover Beach.

*Next Saturday night Bandit Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds and Factory Stocks will be back on the track, joined by Mini Stocks. Ticket prices will be $14.00 for adults, $10.00 for seniors (65+), $3.00 for children 6 to 12, 5 and under free.

The Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange, on Hutton Road.
