Amador Takes Last Pavement Win for 2007
by Sharyn Bragg

(September 29, 2007) Modesto ’s “Racing Farmer” Ed Amador tamed the “Fastest Half Mile in the West” this evening to win the race and the NCMA Sprints Pavement Championship for 2007.  Going into the evening Amador was only slightly ahead of Jimmy Lavell in the points chase, but managed to widen the gap by the end of the night.

David Goodwill was the fast qualifier for the evening; during one of his practice runs he averaged more than 100 miles an hour. He also posted over 100 mph during one of the laps in the heat.  He almost joined Lavell in the 100 mile an hour club

and we’ll probably see that happen in the 2008 season.  Lavell was second quick with Jeff Burrows, Michael Zarevich, and Ed Amador running the top five fast times.

The heat race ended up in a pretty wild ride for Lavell.  He was running on the outside of E. Amador and rubbing is sometimes racing but in open wheel racing it gets pretty nasty sometimes as Lavell launched off of one of Amador’s wheels and ended up in the turn 3-4 wall with his tail crammed up to his back.  The 02 sprint was pretty well finished and Lavell was having some back pain.  When Lavell launched, Zarevich was trying to avoid another problem, also went over Amador’s wheel but landed on all four, managed to go in for repairs and came back out to finish the heat in fifth.  Rob Hammond won the heat and went on to win the Trophy Dash. The evening looked like Hot Rod Hammond had the night in his pocket, but he suffered engine problems and was not able to run the main.

The 20 lap main had Ed Amador and Michael Zarevich trying for the win, E. Amador pulled it off with Zarevich second.  Jeff Burrows ran a close third with Goodwill fourth and Denny Burrell, in his first run on pavement since he lost his car at Madera Speedway, rounding out the top five.  The last main event for 2007 ran 20 clean, caution free laps in just over six minutes.

Championship results and points to be posted soon.  Also fans, friends and family stay tuned for information on the NCMA Sprints banquet to be held November 10.
