News from Manzanita Speedway
by Windy McDonald

NOVEMBER 5, 2007 --- Now that the Open is over at Perris Auto Speedway the entry list is expected to grow considerably before the USAC and CRA sprint cars take to Manzanita Speedway’s half mile track for their qualifying races in the 39th running of the Checker Auto Parts/Budweiser Western Championships. A number of drivers, especially those running for points in both the USAC national chase as well as the USAC/CRA have yet to enter. With two nights to add points to his total second ranked Darren Hagen is still in the hunt but faces an uphill battle in his effort to overtake Levi Jones. Jones carries an 89 point lead into the Western and his car owner, Tony Stewart, has only a 62 point edge over the Keith Kunz Motorsports #67 which is driven by Hagen

All of the top seventeen except Hagen and fifth ranked Jesse Hockett have pre-entered and no doubt they will be in the pits Friday night.

As far as the West Coast based USAC/CRA chase for the championship the top three in the current standings--Tony Jones, Mike Spencer and Danny Sheridan are in the field but fourth ranked Rickie Gaunt, sixth place Rip Williams and ninth place Blake Miller have yet to enter but will undoubtedly be in the field at race time. Also expected to enter are other top 20 drivers including Josh Ford (11) and Tyler Brown (12)

Also not filing an early entry but expected to race is the two time Western champion and winner of the Perris Open Bud Kaeding.

Manzanita officials are expecting about 50 cars to take part in the sprint car portion of the Western.

The Saturday night feature is worth $12,000 to win plus lap prize money. The lap money will paid to the top five on each lap with $20 to the leader then $12, $8, $6 and $4. All starters will be paid at least $500/ The qualifying main event Friday night pays $1500 to win with all who start the feature receiving at least $200.

Western All Stars, the sanctioning body of the super dirt late models, have 37 early entries but a number of their top ten have yet to enter and they, too, expect about 50 cars. Their entry list is headed by points champion Mike Johnson, a 20 year veteran of the racing wars. Johnson has won six feature races this year. His team mate for the Western will be NASCAR star JJ Yeley. Other top ten drivers already entered are A.J. Kirkpatrick (4th), Zack Forster (5th), Ron Bartels (6th) and Ron Meyer (9th). The race is not a point race but the payoff is higher than their regular shows.

The late models will run their qualifying races, including a $3,000 to win and at least $500 to start feature Thursday night on the half mile track and dirt modifieds will also be on hand for a complete show.

The Saturday night feature awards the main event winner $5000 and each starter will get at least $500.
