CAN THE “KING” REMAIN ON HIS THRONE?

by Dan Fleischer

March 27, 2006...Campbell, CA resident Brent Kaeding heads to Tulare’s Thunderbowl Raceway on April 1 in search of the Golden State Challenge series “King of California” title, a crown he has worn 12 times in his illustrious sprint car racing career. However, it’s been a two-year “drought” since Kaeding captured the prestigious championship and the second-generation driver is chomping at the bit to regain the form that has made him a California fan-favorite.

Kaeding captured his first championship in 1988, the GSC series’ third year in existence, and repeated his dominance again in 1988, ’89, and ’90. After being de-throned by Tim Green in 1991, Kaeding came back to win five in-a-row from 1993 through 1997. His other titles came in 1999, 2001 and 2003.

As the years pass however, it becomes more difficult to remain on top of the pedestal, especially against the “young guns” like defending champion Sean Becker, Jonathan Allard, Andy Forsberg and Clovis’ Jason Meyers, who makes an unscheduled visit to Tulare while the new NST Outlaw series has the weekend off. Meyers currently sits atop the $10,000 season-long point standings fund established by track promoter Steve Faria based on his strong performances during the NST two-day shows in February.
Veterans Ronnie Day and Steve Kent will challenge the “King” as they have for the last 20 years. Kent captured the title in 1986 and 1987 while Day was the top dog in 2000. Other name drivers on tap include local favorites Ricci Faria and Peter Murphy.

Accompanying the winged GSC series will be SCRA’s 360 c.i. non-winged cars with standout drivers Steven Williams, Danny Olmstead, Richard Harvey Jr., Jonathan Logan and Peter Murphy, who plans on doing double duty.
