Sept. 16th Santa Maria Speedway Recap
by Jim Pluhar

Santa Maria, CA - September 16, 2006...Bandit Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Fox 11 First at Ten Street Stocks vs. Bakersfield Super Streets East/West Shootout and Mini Stocks blasted onto the 1/3-mile oval at Santa Maria Speedway Saturday night.

The 30-lap Sprint Car feature event became a struggle between Jayson May and Mike Knopf of Santa Maria. Knopf led the first four laps before May went to the front on lap five. Knopf managed to slip back by the Taft driver on the seventeenth circuit and held that position until lap twenty-one when May made the final pass and went on to victory. Knopf held on for second with Bellflower's Ron Wade third, Bakersfield's Rusty Carlile fourth, and Eric Severson, of Torrance, fifth. May and Jesse Mack, of Visalia, won 8-lap heat races and point leader Jeff Fiscus, of Los Osos, set fast time of 14.535 seconds averaging 82 miles-per-hour but fell out of the main with a broken front end in turn one. Don't feel too bad for Fiscus, he need only take the green for the October 14 Bandit/VRA feature event to clinch the 2006 SMS Bandit Sprint Car championship.

Brad Pounds became the one of the few drivers to defeat point leader Jimmy Reeves, of Laton, in their 25-lap main event. The Bakersfield pilot came from eleventh in the field and chased down Reeves, who had taken the lead from Santa Maria's Danny Lauer on lap five. After overtaking Reeves on lap twelve, Pounds pulled away for the win. Tim Breshears, of Santa Maria, came on to place third, followed by Watsonville's Clay Daly and Arroyo Grande's Chad Weber. Pounds, Reeves and Brian Burnes captured 8-lap heat races.

The East vs. West Shootout found one Santa Maria driver, Kenny Kirkpatrick of Nipomo, holding off four Bakersfield drivers for the victory in their 30-lap feature event. Kirkpatrick to the point for good on the 23rd circuit and held the lead for the final seven laps to finish ahead of Shootout point leader Lee Jensen, Lonnie Welch, Sean Minor and Coalinga's Rich Denman. Jensen, Tim Randolph, of Santa Maria, and Brad Pounds, of Bakersfield, won the 8-lap heat races and Jensen set fast time of 17.062 seconds (70 mph average).

Camarillo's Andrew Greiman became the first driver of the season to clinch a division championship at the Speedway with his sixth 20-lap main event win of the season, in ten starts. Greiman beat out Ken Kehs, of Arroyo Grande, for the win as-well-as the championship and "Rookie of the Year" honors. Lompoc's Mike Weigel came home third, followed by Nipomo's Justin Marsh and Atascadero's Aaron Cervantez. Greiman and Kehs won 8-lap heat races.

Next Saturday night will be the 29th Annual Bill Baker Memorial featuring Century 21 Hometown Realty Late Model Stocks, IMCA Modifieds and Factory Stocks.

Spectator gates open at three, with qualifying at five and racing at six. The Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange on Hutton Road.
