August 19th Santa Maria Speedway Recap
by Jim Pluhar

Santa Maria, CA - August 19, 2006...Bandit Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Fox 11 First at Ten Street Stocks and Mini Stocks all saw action Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway.

Davey Pombo, of Kerman, started seventh in the 30-lap Sprint Car main event and worked his way slowly through the field to take the lead from Hollywood's Kevin Kierce on lap 21. From that point on the race was for second place, and what a race it was, culminating on the final lap when Nipomo's Jeff Fiscus went from third to second. Greg Porte, of San Luis Obispo, briefly passed Fiscus, who was chasing Kierce, but, coming out of turn four for the final time, Fiscus split Kierce and Porte to arrive at the checkers first behind Pombo. Kierce finished third, Porte fourth and Santa Maria's Mike Knopf made a solid drive to finish in the top-five. Pombo, Atascadero's Joey Layman and Taft's Jayson May captured 8-lap heat race victories and Porte set fast time of 14.075 seconds for an average speed of 85 mph.

No matter where Jimmy Reeves starts, this time eighth, in the IMCA Modified 25-lap feature event, the Laton driver seems to be able to find his way to the front. Randy McGraw took the lead from Atascadero's Darrin Davis on the seventh circuit and appeared to be off to his first win of the year until, four laps from the finish, Reeves got by the Ojai driver and went on to his sixth main event victory of the season. McGraw held on for second with Santa Maria's Tim Breshears third. Davis took fourth followed by Ron German of Paso Robles. Eight-lap heat races were won by Breshears and Danny Lauer of Santa Maria.

Kenny Kirkpatrick, of Nipomo, battled by Santa Maria's Tom Breshears on lap 8 of the 25-lap Street Stock main event to capture his second win of the season. Billy Simkins, of Bakersfield, led the first five laps before being overtaken by Breshears, who was only on the point for two circuits before being passed by Kirkpatrick. Tim Randolph, of Santa Maria, was third at the finish, Breshears fourth and Santa Maria's Toby Randolph fifth. Kirkpatrick and Chad Shaffer, of Santa Maria, scored 8-lap heat race wins.

Twenty Mini Stocks ran caution free in their 20-lap feature event. Atascadero's Mike Leland led every lap but the first and last as he tried to win his first main event. Point leader Andrew Greiman, of Camarillo, spoiled Leland's efforts with a last lap pass for his fourth victory of the season. Leland was second, Santa Maria's Frank Nyback third, Lompoc's Paul Terrones fourth and Arroyo Grande's Justin Crockett fifth. Rob Gilbertson, of Santa Maria, and Ken Kehs, of Arroyo Grande, won their 8-lap heat races.

Next Saturday night one of the premier events of the season comes to the 1/3-mile oval when Budweiser presents the USAC/CRA Non-Winged 410 Sprint Cars. NMRA TQ Midgets, WRA Vintage Midgets & Sprints and Mini Stocks will complete the program.

Spectator gates open at three, with qualifying at five and racing at six. The Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange on Hutton Road.
