August 12th Santa Maria Speedway Recap
by Jim Pluhar

Santa Maria, CA - August 12, 2006...Bandit Sprint Cars, East vs. West Shootout Street Stocks, Factory Stocks and Mini Stocks gave race fans plenty of action Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway.

Santa Maria's Danny Sheridan owned the Sprint Car division for the night, setting fast time of 14.008 seconds (85 mps average), winning his 8-lap heat race, and capping off the evening with a victory in the 25-lap feature event. Eric Severson, of Torrance, finished second on his first run of the season with the local Bandits. The rest of the top-five were: Mike Knopf, Santa Maria; Jayson May, Taft; and Joey Layman, Atascadero. Knopf won the second heat race.

The Bakersfield/SMS East vs. West Street Stock Shootout found popular local driver Joey Silva, of Santa Maria, back in victory circle after a long absence. Nipomo's Kenny Kirkpatrick chased Silva for most of the 30-lap distance before spinning himself out of contention, four laps from the end, while going for the lead on the back chute. When the green flag flew again, with three laps to go, Lee Jensen, of Bakersfield, had a shot at Silva for the win. "Sparky", as he's known, was up to the challenge and Jensen had to settle for second, with Santa Maria's Tim Randolph third, Coalinga's Rich Denman fourth and Caruthers' Johnny Cardoza fifth. Mike Corwin, of Bakersfield, set fast time of 16.639 second for an average speed of around 71 miles-per-hour. Bakersfield's Billy Simkins and Randolph each won an 8-lap heat race.

Factory Stocks showed up with their usual 20 car field, bested this time by Santa Maria's Kirk Morgan who cruised to his third victory of the season in the 20-lap main event after moving to the lead on lap 8. Goleta's Matt Marchiando followed Morgan to the checkers with Nipomo's Tom Renner third. Point leader Glen Sparks camel in fourth with Arroyo Grande's Robert Read fifth. Eight-lap heat races went to Renner and Les Vogt of Arroyo Grande.

Mini Stocks also brought 20 cars to the track. Ken Kehs drove his mount to his second win of the season in the 20-lap main event. The Arroyo Grande driver finished ahead of Nipomo's Justin Marsh, Santa Maria's Frank Nyback and point leader Andrew Greiman, of Camarillo, to move to second in points, displacing Arroyo Grande's Justin Crockett who had a fifteenth place finish. Mike Leland, of Atascadero, rounded out the top-five. Marsh and Paul Terrones, of Lompoc, captured 8-lap heat race wins.

Next Saturday night Bandit Sprint Cars, Fox 11 First at Ten Street Stocks and Mini Stocks will return to SMS, joined by IMCA Modifieds.

Spectator gates open at three, with qualifying at five and racing at six. The Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange on Hutton Road.
