LOGAN CAPTURES SCRA MAIN AT QUINCY

by Dan Fleischer

June 3, 2006 In the “Sport of Kings,” horse racing, it’s called “Breaking Your Maiden” when a horse wins for the first time. In the sport of sprint car racing, using Horse Power properly can sometimes lead to the same ending. That’s what happened to Jonathan Logan, as he raced to his first-ever SCRA sprint car main event at American Valley Speedway in Quincy, CA, “Breaking his Maiden.”

Starter Lee Jaskowiak displayed the first green flag of the event but it was temporary indeed to say the least. As the combatants crossed the start-finish line, outside front row starter Jim Richardson’s machine came to a slow stop in turn one as a coil wire dislodged, ending the fan favorite and co-promoter’s night. Richardson resides in near-by Greyeagle.
Logan used all the horsepower in his #32 machine on the complete restart and became the “speed” horse as he broke from the number one gate, the pole position. He then led wire-to-wire in the 20-lap finale, outlasting his Hanford, CA neighbor, and good buddy, Richard Harvey Jr. in a hard fought battle to the wire.

It wasn’t that easy however, as Logan experienced several anxious moments in the waning laps as the wily veteran Harvey applied the pressure. Harvey, who had been playing a patience waiting game, trailed Logan by about 100 yards for the better part of the race. Rather than having to pick up the tempo, he was aided by a caution flag when Jack Clark and Doug Ramey collected each other on the backstretch on lap 15. Both their cars were heavily damaged but neither driver was injured.

With five laps remaining and the chips on the line, Harvey dogged Logan when the green was unfurled and was glued to his rear nerfbar, looking for an opening. When the white flag was displayed, the two cars were in lockstep and the fans were on their feet. However, entering the final turn, Harvey was unable to get a bite and the youngster Logan won by a mere two car lengths. Tom Haxall rounded out the podium after challenging Harvey for second on the final restart, but he was unable to keep up with the two leaders.
In the winner’s circle, Harvey jumped out of his car and applied a big bear hug on his good friend Logan, while celebrating his (Harvey’s) best finish in two years. Rounding out the top-ten were Willie Croft, Dave Sims, Darren Slater, Herman Klein, Doug Ramey, Jack Clark and Brad Bumgarner.

Klein had his ups and downs during his first outing with SCRA. His machine broke down after qualifying and it appeared he was finished for the night. However, he borrowed a backup car from Richardson to finish a credible seventh. It might have been a much better finish for the Sacramento resident as he battled Harvey for second place early in the going, but he bounced off the black-gumbo cushion in turn one and dropped several positions.

Heat winner’s included Haxall, Harvey, Richardson and Croft. Logan captured he Forrest Transportation Dash from his outside front row starting position while Richardson recorded the evening’s quick qualifying time.
