Totally topless side show joins firebreathing Civil War Sprints Saturday at Placerville
For first time event, Wingless Sprints will join competitive Winged Series for special event

JULY 30, 2006 -  PLACERVILLE, CA – This Saturday night marks a big night of open wheel racing at John Padjen’s Placerville Speedway as two of California’s greatest traveling venues will join forces for a full night of spectacular racing action. The Hoosier Racing Tires Civil War Series returns to Placerville this Saturday night and will be joined for the first time in history by the popular Joe Hunt Magnetos Wingless Sprint Cars for one night only.

Saturday night marks the seventh segment of the traveling Civil War race series and will be the second to last opportunity for drivers to earn a position in the top 32 point standings to be elgible for the upcoming Pacific Sprint Cup during Gold Cup Week at Silver Dollar Speedway. 

While many of the best teams in California will be battling to advance in the point standings under a near $15,000 purse for the evening, the wingless sprint cars will join the event for make the night an open wheel extravaganza. Sponsored by Joe Hunt Magnetos, the wingless sprint cars were added to the schedule for this one night only as a make up date for a previously cancelled race at Placerville.

With both venues on hand, the pit area is expected to be packed at Placerville Speedway with California’s best open wheelers on hand and the grandstands are expected to fill accordingly as both of these venues soar in popularity among area race fans. ]

In the Civil War series, Andy Forsberg of Auburn continues to lead the point standings. With two feature wins to his name, Forsberg has a 26-point lead over Colby Weisz of Colfax. Placerville’s Jimmy Trulli ranks third in the series, trailing the leader by 38-points and sitting ahead of defending series champion Greg DeCaires who rounds out the top four, sitting 62-points from the lead. Chad Riolo of Roseville rounds out the top five in the standings, trailing the lead position by 62-points and sitting tied with DeCaires.

So far this season four different drivers have managed to win feature events in the traveling Civil War series. Forsberg is the only multiple winner with two feature wins. Colby Weisz has one victory so far. Willie Croft of Sacramento and Brad Sweet of Indianapolis each have solo wins along with Midwestern star Jesse Hockett who won the recent Calistoga Cup.

In the Hunt Magnetos Wingless Spec Sprint Series, six different drivers have won feature events in the 14 races that have taken place between Placerville and Silver Dollar Speedway. Darrell Hanestad of Clayton has taken five trophies home so far this season. Series leader Bob Newberry of Antioch has three wins to his name while Justin Funkhouser of Paradise owns two victories. Solo victories in the series have been earned by Taylor Simas, Danny Olmstead, Terry Shank Jr. and former Placerville Champion Billy Wallace. 

Entering Saturday’s double feature event, Newberry maintains the point lead with a 76-point advantage over Funkhouser. Jay Youngman ranks third, 84-points out of the lead. Dave Hays is fourth overall, trailing the top position by 99-points while Jeremy Hawes of Marysville rounds out the top five, 167 points away from the lead.
Much like the Civil War contenders, the wingless drivers will also be gunning for top finishes Saturday night. The top 22 drivers in the standings of this division are eligible for the inaugural John Padjen Motorsports Wingless Sprint Car Invitational at the Wednesday Night Gold Cup this year. They will share the spotlight with the Civil War cars for the evening that opens four big nights of racing at Silver Dollar Speedway.

Saturday’s event will consist of qualifying for the Civil War sprint cars followed by heat races, preliminary features and feature events for both divisions. The evening will conclude with the 30-lap Civil War feature event. It is expected a handful of drivers, including Wallace, will drive in both divisions on Saturday night for this special event.
The gates of Placerville Speedway will open at 5 p.m. with qualifying starting at 6:30 followed by racing at 7. Admission will be $15 for adults, $10 for juniors and $4 for children. Those under six will be admitted for free. Further information can be located at www.johnpadjenmotorsports.com.
