USAC/CRA SPRINTS OPEN PAS SEASON SATURDAY
By Robert Mayson

January 31, 2006..The USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series will open up the 2006 Perris Auto Speedway (Perris Calif.) season this Saturday afternoon, February 4th, with a 30-lap main event presented by Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply.

During last year’s Perris opener, Damion Gardner, Concord, Calif., won the first of his 15 main events and was the fastest qualifier. Gardner would go on to earn fast time honors 22 times during the 2005 season, en route to his first USAC/CRA Driving Title. Gardner began his 2006 campaign by once again setting fast time during the season opener at Manzanita Speedway (Phoenix, AZ) on January 21st, before finishing fourth in the main event.

Defending USAC National Sprint Car Champion Levi Jones of Olney, Illinois, won the Manzy race, with Cory Kruseman of Ventura, Calif., finishing second. Kruseman does, however, lead the USAC/CRA point standings heading into this weekend. Last season, Kruseman claimed six of his nine series wins at Perris, including the season-ending Jack Kindoll Classic (11/19/05). Kruseman also finished second in series points last year.

Rip Williams, Yorba Linda, Calif., was third in series points last year and was the only driver other than Gardner and Kruseman to score multiple wins (2) at the PAS. Williams was scored a disappointing 18th at Phoenix two weeks ago after flipping early in the main event.

Former USAC National Sprint, Midget and Silver Crown Champion, Dave Darland, Lincoln, IN, is also expected to compete Saturday. Last year, Darland won the Oval Nationals at Perris and the season opener and Western World Championships at Manzanita Speedway. Interestingly, of his 12 USAC/CRA starts in 2005, his 23rd place finish in the PAS opener was by far his poorest outing.

Danny Sheridan, Santa Maria, Calif., enters the weekend ranked third in series points thanks to his fifth place finish at Manzanita Speedway. Finishing ninth in the 2005 point standings, Sheridan posted two runner-up finishes at Perris last year.

Saturday afternoon’s race will mark second of 34 slated CRA races, 22 of which will be held on the 1/2-mile dirt Perris oval. Spectator gates will open at 11:00 am with the first race slated for 1:00 PM.
