Ventura Raceway's Opening Night - March 12, 2005

(Oxnard, CA., 3/07/2005)  Saturday night March 12, at 5:00pm marks the opening night for the 2005 Ventura Raceway/VRA season, at its home track at the Ventura County Fairgrounds/Seaside Park, located just off the 101 Freeway in Ventura.  With all the top drivers from past seasons coming back in 2005, the outlook for outstanding racing action week after week is highly anticipated.

Saturday’s action will include four of VRA’s top classes: VRA 360 Sprint Cars, VRA Senior Sprints, VRA Modifieds and IMCA Modfifieds.  Last year’s champions, Tom Stansberry, in Sprint Cars, Wiley Miller, in Senior Sprints, Rick Rodarte, in Modifieds and Gary Curtis in IMCA Modifieds will be there to try to get off to a great start in the new 2005 season.

VRA Sprint Cars will once again headline the night of racing with a full program of heat races and a twenty car, 30 lap main event.  Drivers scheduled to compete include, Kevin Kierce, Bill Welch, Steve Conrad, Rob Kershaw, Chris Wakim, Blake Miller, Chris Tramel, Joe Henderson and a host of other fine drivers.  These open wheeled, V 8 powered, cars are the fastest VRA Cars that race at Ventura Raceway hitting speeds in excess of seventy miles per hour down the short front and back stretches.  Close hard fought racing is the rule not the exception every night they race.

VRA Senior Sprints return to action Saturday night with a full field of over 45-year-old drivers expected to be in attendance.  Led by 2004 series champion, Wiley Miller, this class has continued to grow in numbers and quality of racing over the past seasons.  All the top drivers in this class will be here. Drivers to watch in 2005 include, Tim Moon, Bruce Douglas Jr., Ron Bach, Danny Miller, and a host of others who want to make 2005 their year to shine.  These drivers race the same cars that the regular VRA Sprint Car drivers race.  The only difference is their events are a little shorter.

VRA Modifieds and IMCA Modifieds are also competing on Saturday night.  These classes are designed for mid-level racers who may wish to move up to other classes in the future.  These classes always put on great racing each night they race.  IMCA Modifieds are V 8 powered modified stock cars that are capable of high speeds on Ventura’s 1/5 mike oval. VRA Modfieds are true racecars patterned after the larger IMCA Modifieds . V 6 or four cylinder engines power them.  Some of the top drivers in IMCA Modifieds are Donald Houghton, Will Smith, Chris Tonoli and 2004 champion, Gary Curtis who will be running a limited schedule in 2005. Top VRA Modified drivers include Dave Lidren, Ric Bronson, Marty McLAughlin, Tom Morley, Jody Davis, Bruce Blackman Jr. and Jeff Goddard.
