SHERMAN NEARS RECORD WITH HIS 12TH WIN OF THE YEAR
by Windy McDonald

Phoenix, AZ (August 20) A near capacity crowd was treated to a potpourri of open wheel racing in Manzanita Speedway’s 54th Anniversary Races Saturday night with Jeremy Sherman (Sprints) and Jay Foster (BRA Dirt Modifeds) taking main event wins on the half mile track and Stevie Sussex (AMRA Midgets) and Chad Boat (AMSCA Mini Sprints) notching wins on the 13/rd mile track. The crowded grandstands led Dennis Wood, Manzy’s General Manager, to add an extra $500 to each of the four divisions’ purses.

Beating Jeremy Sherman is not impossible but as he has proven 11 times before on Manzanita’s short track it is highly improbable and he added another win, this one on Mananita’s half mile track, Saturday night. His win came over Marty Miller, the 2000 champion who managed to stay close after Sherman took the lead from him on the sixth lap but Sherman pulled away and won by over four seconds. His 12th win puts him just one behind the record of 13 wins in a season set by Bob Ream, Jr in his 1998 championship season.

Five regular season races plus the Checker Auto Parts/Budweiser Western World Championships remain on the 2005 schedule. Two of those races will be contested on the half mile track.

Jay Ervine started on the pole and had his top finish of the year as he held off Chris Bonneau who scored his first top five of the year. Bobby Boone, after a race long battle with Josh Pelkey, claimed the fifth spot. Behind Pelkey at the checkered flag were Seainn Hendricsen, Jeff Henry, Ben Gregg and Andy Reinbold.

The 23 car field was the smallest of the year but 18 of the top 20 were on hand. Only ninth ranked Mike Leslie and 11th ranked Bob Ream, Jr. failed to show. Leslie dropped out of the top ten and Ream’s absence cost him four positions in the standings. Ervine vaulted to ninth and Reinbold secured the tenth spot in the updated points standings.

The top 10 in points were inverted in the first five rows and the rest of the field was based on the finish order in the semi main. Ben Gregg took the semi over Hendricsen, Bonneau, Chuck Buckman, Bruce St. James, Justin Fisher, Tom Ogle, Mike Bonneau, Bob Bishop and Scott Pasmore who did not finish. Bishop, owner of the #62 car ended a 35 year retirement to race in the Anniversary show.

Fisher drove the Colcord- Norman car in the semi but turned the car over to Matt Rossi for the feature so that Rossi could maintain his  points after his car developed problems in the trophy dash. Rossi was the second car out of the race but his 21st place finish unofficially kept him third in points but only seven points ahead of Jeff Henry. Pelkey captured the three lap dash over Henry, Sherman and Rossi.

The Sprints have the show to themselves on September 3rd Fan Appreciation night. They will be on the half mile track and will qualify for only the third time this year.
