ANOTHER CLEAN SWEEP FOR SHERMAN
By Windy McDonald

Phoenix, AZ (July 16) With three former track champions in pursuit Jeremy Sherman pulled away in the closing laps to post his ninth Arizona Sprint Car Association feature win of the year and out of state drivers took the top four positions in the Barnett Harley Davidson Dirt Modified Championships tour event Saturday night at Manzanita Speedway.

Scott Pasmore led the first three laps in the 25 lap sprint car main event and then gave way to Bob Ream, Jr. with Sherman giving chase. Ream, the 1998 champion and Sherman, the current points leader, put on a ten lap display of close, clean racing before Sherman finally took the lead on the 13th lap.

Sherman had made repeated tries for the lead and a slide job put him in front on the eighth lap but he slid wide and Ream made a cut back move that had him back in front.

Sherman started pulling away after moving to the lead and Charles Davis, Jr., making his second start of the year, moved by Ream on the 16th lap and took up the chase. Davis was almost five seconds behind the leader but slowly closed the gap. However he was never a serious threat as he gave the Ashley Corey car a great drive.

The pace was fast and Sherman was lapping cars with Davis, the 1996 and ’97 ASCA champion, hoping to repeat the win he achieved in his only other appearance with the ASCA. In that one he came from 17th to nip Sherman in the closing laps. This time it was not going to happen as Sherman stayed full throttle through the traffic and had a 4.69 second advantage over Davis at the checkered flag.

Ream maintained third with 2000 champion Marty Miller in fourth and R.J. Johnson in fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Bruce St. James, Jeff Henry, Brian Hacker, Jesse Dunham and Shon Deskins.

Sherman’s win greatly increased his points lead as his closest pursuers had difficult outings. Josh Pelkey was one of the first cars out of the feature while Matt Rossi and Nathan High had problems and did not qualify for the feature. Rossi had overheating problems in the semi main while High dropped out of his heat race with terminal problems in the Pritchett Chevy and then landed a ride in Bubby Earle’s car for the semi. He lasted only a lap when
he became part of a three car crash and rolled the car.

Pasmore picked up his first heat race win of the year with a good drive from third to first. Pasmore, a newsman with Channel 3, beat Bruce St. James from KTAR radio. Miller finished third ahead of Trey Deane and Mike Harris.

Sherman roared out of the back row to nail down his 12th heat race win of the year in the second heat. Andy Reinbold finished second ahead of Shon Deskins and Steve Sandrolini.

Mike Martin used the cushion to his advantage in beating Ream, R.J. Johnson and Brian Hacker in the final heat.

Sherman’s clean sweep included a win in the Arizona Race Mart trophy dash, his fourth dash win of the year. Trailing him were Martin, Ben Gregg and Johnson.

The sprint cars return to Manzy’s one third mile track July 23rd with the AMRA Midgets sharing the program.
