BOESPFLUG “SPINS” HIS WAY TO VICTORY
by Dan Fleischer

(MAY 1, 2005) Despite a 360-degree spin while leading on lap 16, Chad Boespflug raced to victory at Tulare’s Thunderbowl Raceway Saturday evening. The young teenager (17) led wire-to-wire in the curfew shortened 25-lap event to post his second victory of the season.  He also romped home to victory at Chowchilla on March 26th.

Boespflug was building a comfortable lead when the incident (spin) occurred but never missed a beat and continued on to the checkers, although two late yellows bunched the field offering Tyler Spath two last-chance shots at the lead.  Spath had nothing for the leader however, and had to contend with front-row starter Chris D’Arcey to preserve the runner-up position.

Spath, in his finest showing this year, battle D’Arcey throughout the feature, running neck and neck and exchanging the spot several times before prevailing.  Rounding out the top-five were Jim Richardson and Steven Williams.

With his fifth place finish, Williams maintained his season’s point lead (250) but is now followed by Boespflug (231), who leap-frogged over Richardson ( 223) into the second position.

Richardson, who encountered rear-end problems in his heat, was forced to start in the 16th position, but methodically worked his way forward earning the evening’s “Hard Charger Award.”

Andy Forsberg, who did double-duty during the evening by running in the Golden State Challenge events, started in the third position and showed signs of being a threat for the victory.  However, he slowed to a stop during a lap-five yellow after tangling with Aaron Chaney on the front straight-away, an incident that tore off Chaney’s wheel, sidelining the Fresno resident for the duration.

First-time participant Grant Jones, a Tulare resident, rewarded his home-town supporters with a seventh place finish after running fourth in his heat.  The youngster, who also qualified 10th quickest, certainly made a statement.

Three heat races produced great entertaining racing for the fans with Forsberg, Williams and Danny Olmstead taking victories.  Boespflug captured The Passing Masters Dash as he out-gunned pole sitter D’Arcey into the first turn and was never headed.  In doing so, “The Hanford Hornet” sits atop The Passing Masters standings with nine points, one more than Danny Olmstead and three ahead of Steven Williams.

Quick time in the qualifying session went to Spath, the second-generation driver out of Chico, CA, who was followed by Chaney, Harvey, Forsberg and Boesfplug.
