 Press Release

Wiesz, Hanestad, Dozier and McCollach cruise at TCS

Marysville CA. Earlier in the day Colby Wiesz said he’d be around to “support what they’re doing” at Twin Cities Speedway. He joined the association and proceeded to trounce the competition into submission Saturday night. Wiesz, who will try for his fourth TCS Championship this year, led every lap of the Pacific Sprint Car feature event. For the second consecutive time 3-time champion and perennial favorite at the speedway, Korey Lovell of Yuba City, finished second to the leader.

Two minor incidents plagued the early laps of the race, and then it went green all the way. The Pacific Sprint Cars provided the fastest action of the new season. The track surface produced a host of high-speed wheelies and some of the best passing opportunities seen thus far.

Last week’s main event winner and the event’s fastest qualifier, Sacramento’s Herman Klein, could manage only a 6th place finish. Point standings will be log-jammed at the top when the new standings are released. Jeff Halleib, of Lake of the Pines finished 3rd and outside pole sitter Sparks Nevada’s Mike Monahan had to settle for 4th after a race-long duel with Halleib. Monohan spent much of the race with his front wheels in the air. Dennis Harvey of Sacramento was a rocket during the race. Harvey had very poor luck in the opening event last week but picked up the pace to post a fine 5th place finish this time around. Troy Degaton, Kevin Lovell and Wiesz won the heats. Klein’s fast lap was clocked at 11.490.

Wingless Warrior, Darrell Hanestad of San Jose, swept the program in the companion wingless Speedway Sprint Car series. This new series continues to grow. The main event was plagued by two major crashes before a lap was scored. Sacramento’s Rick Eversult flipped his sprinter on the front stretch when he got into the rear of Nathan Johnson’s car as a race-slowing yellow flag was displayed. Eversult was unhurt.

The new green was welcomed with a six-car pile-up. One car got going end-for-end in the melee. Woodland’s Kenny Bair was unhurt after his wild ride.

The top six cars in the event had been beaten and battered when eighth starting Hanested started the event in 2nd position behind Tim Sherman. Sherman and Hanestad had a brief, spirited duel for two circuits before Hanestad pulled away for the victory. The best race of the night was a mid-race tussle between Yuba City’s Jerry Bartlett and Antioch’s Chris Magoon. Magoon was headed toward the front after being involved in the first lap accident. His progress stopped at Bartlett’s purple #00. The duo twisted their cars in a crowd-pleasing race that Magoon inevitably won. Magoon was 3rd and Bartlett 4th at the final flag. Bartlett showed his versatility as he won the TCS Stock Car Series main event last week before switching to his non-wing Speedway Sprinter for this week’s encounter.

Marysville’s Brandon Dozier presented his grand father with the best possible birthday present. Dozier won the TCS Mini Stock Series main event after a tumultuous duel with early race pace setter, Greg Prather. Prather is a former modified midget star at TCS. Prather finished third as he faded a bit after his race with Dozier.

Yuba City’s Kevin Sprague and Heather Bartlett continued to impress as the new season hit full stride. Sprague slugged his way to the front and passed Prather in the late going to secure the runner up spot. Bartlett raced from 18th to 4th in another showcase outing.

Dozier has said he is headed into sprint cars soon, and will be in a winged car in a month or so. Dozier placed an unusual period on the night’s proceedings when he hammered the back stretch wall on his cool off lap after taking the checkers. Dozier, Bartlett and Ken Reische picked up the heat race wins.

Like the Pacific Sprint Car Division, the Mini Stocks should have a tight point race going into competition in two weeks.

The SORA Sprint 100’s were also on the program. It their main event an enjoyable mid-race battle between 2003 SORA Champion Tony Gaoiran and Kerry McCollach ensued. At ½ distance, McCollach’s #41 began to leave runner-up Gaoiran and went on to post a convincing win. Afterward, the likable Tony G admitted he would have had to have help from a “yellow flag or lapped cars” to beat the highflying McCollach. That help never came.

Sacramento’s McCollach won the fast heat and Vacaville’s Jim Pfifer won the other preliminary.

The California Sprint Car Civil War will be presented this Saturday night April 17th at the quick ¼ mile. Gates open at 5. Qualifying is at 6:15 and the first race starts promptly at 7.

Take CA HWY 20 to Marysville CA. Go south on Ramirez Rd 1 mile to the track.
