HOCKETT CLAIMS SECOND PEDAL CAR TROPHY AND $10,000 AT LAKESIDE SPEEDWAY
by Norm Bogan

KANSAS CITY, KS, AUGUST 21, 2004 - Last year, Jesse Hockett from Warsaw,
Missouri was a nineteen year old unknown to West Coast Sprint Racers, when he
upended the travelers to claim the spoils at Lakeside Speedway's big $10,000 to win NWWC Tour Finale.  In addition to the money is the coveted Pedal Car Trophy, which he gave to his car owners.

The 2004 NAPA AUTO PARTS/AUTO TRADER MAGAZINE NON WING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TOUR let the racers become familiar with Jesse once again, as he missed a $30,000 payday at Oskaloosa by about two feet.  While Jesse has primarily been a winged racer, he has certainly exhibited extraordinary skills without the wing.  Not only did Jesse atone himself for the close call at Oskaloosa, but he also
acquired a Pedal Car for himself.

Hockett acknowledged his car owners, VKCC Motorsports for providing him with
quality equipment and while the near future is not clear at this time, Jesse would like to try some more sprint racing without the upstairs tin.  Hockett would like to take a shot at some of the late year big money shows out west, so a note to car owners; this guy is the real deal.

Jesse started fifth in the twenty-five-car field and kept early leader, Tony Elliott in sight as they eventually wove their way through traffic.  Jesse was slicing and dicing, running high and low, catching Tony and challenging him for several laps before driving around to assume the lead.  While Elliott fought back trying to regain the point, Jesse held him off and with two laps to go, had the crowd on their feet cheering the local boy on to the checkers.

The event started early for the competitors as Lakeside Promoter, Mark Olson and his crew served up their annual Barbeque for all the visiting racers.  The Lakeside Speedway staff goes out of their way to accommodate the visiting racers.  They take pride in the track preparation, giving the touring drivers two nights of excellent racing surface.  With the top four cars from Friday night locked into tonight's "A" Main, the remaining twenty-one cars on hand ran in three heats and then all were allowed to participate in the Feature.

Dave Darland was the hard charger coming from nineteenth starting position to finish sixth.  Tony Elliott looked strong in the first two-thirds of the race.  Rickie Gaunt came from twelfth to claim the runner-up spot.  Alan Ballard moved ahead ten positions, after suffering engine problems during qualifying.

The tour has taken the gypsies from the West Coast to New Mexico, on to Iowa, then to a new venue at Gas City, Indiana before returning west to Tulsa and ending with the two-day finale at Lakeside Speedway.

Now the teams will return home and complete the SCRA season with several rescheduled shows.  In retrospect, this tour was successful, since the car counts at most venues provided some quality racing for the fans.  The crowd attendance was good at all the races and many of the existing, plus additional tracks want to enlist for the 2005 version of the NWWC Tour.
