Rescino Posts Back-to-Back CASA Features at Altamont
By Glenn Hopper

5-22-04 - Tracy, CA. Nicholas Rescino backed up his last California Asphalt Sprintcar Association feature event win with his second win in a row at Altamont Motorsports Park. Rescino topped a solid 17 car field at the big half-mile speedway in the hotly contested 30 lap CASA main and also took command of the Mike Coy Concrete Trophy Dash Challenge with his third trophy dash win of the season in what may have been the most exciting trophy dash in Altamont history. During the ultra-fast three-lap speed fest, each of the four competitors managed to be in a different running order each time they crossed the finish line. Fans alternately stood and cheered or collectively held their breath with every move and pass on the track.

In qualifying, fast time honors went to Mark Monico as he bested the field in time trials with a 17.686 lap at 101.821 MPH. Six drivers recorded sub-18 second laps including Destiney Hays and Jared Consani who both joined the 100 MPH Club with their efforts. Hays posted her first CASA heat win in heat number one over Consani and fast timer Monico moved skillfully through the field to take heat number two from speedster Brian McClish.

Smooth running rookie Jared Consani, by virtue of his sixth fast qualifying effort, brought the field to green with two-time CASA winner McClish along side. As the field streaked into turn one, the battle for the point saw McClish have to contend with Consani, then Hays and CASA points leader Matt DeMartini. A lap 10 caution flag flew for Joe Hauck’s contact with the turn three wall and stalled race leader McClish, who had to restart at the back of the pack. Destiney Hays assumed the point on the restart with Rescino, DeMartini, Monico, Consani and Bryan Bullard in hot pursuit. DeMartini retired from the event a few laps later and by then Rescino had passed Hays for the lead when a caution for Allen Harney slowed the field again. It was Harney’s first race back from his season ending crash of last fall and his new #25 stalled in turn one.

On the ensuing restart, contact between Larry Texeria and Earle Stanton resulted in Stanton backing into the turn two wall while Harney and Marvin Mitchell each sustained minor collateral damage in attempting to avoid the accident, unlike Stanton who was finished for the night, they were able to continue. Rescino then paced the field through the white flag when third place Monico suffered a smoky fate in turn four and the field passed under a yellow/checkered flag with a stout Rescino winning over Hays, McClish who charged back through the field for third, Bullard and Consani. Mike McCreary moved from deep in the pack to sixth over Texeria in his best finish to date, Glenn Hopper, Scott Clough and Monico who was credited with a tenth place finish. Sparky Howard and Dan Gonderman each made their first CASA starts of the year but were unable to finish the feature event.
