OFFICIAL 2003 SPECIFICATIONS FOR NON-WINGED SPRINT CARS

ATTENTION ALL DRIVERS: Our goal is to complete our racing programs by 10:30 p.m. The pit booth will be open from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and the following will be enforced ... Any driver not in his assigned starting spot when the cars roll onto the track for any event, will start at the rear of the pack. Once the initial green flag has been thrown, you may not join the field unless there is a complete restart. All races will use a rolling start. Sponsors will be read over the P.A. system during the course of the evening. Main events will be limited to one (1) minute per lap (Count down clock will be stopped on red flags).

ROLL CAGE
Roll cage must be at least 1.375-inch seamless tubing, professionally designed. Minimum .095-inch wall thickness. Any filler panels on roll cage must be metal or fiberglass, not plastic. Triangular roll bar filler cannot exceed 12 inches and must remain behind seat.

BUMPERS
Steel rear bumpers and nerf bars (rub-rails) mandatory.

SAFETY
Competition shoulder harness at least three inches, lap belt at least three inches, sub-strap, and arm restraints mandatory. Metal to metal buckles are required on shoulder and seat belts. Seat belts must be dated within three years of the start of the season. Fire retardant gloves, shoes, stockings, underwear and hood and neck brace required. SFI fire retardant fire suit mandatory. Helmets are required and must be Snell SA95. Helmet must be worn at all times car is on the track and must accompany vehicle at time of inspection. Window openings must remain open, except roll cage net on right side mandatory, left side recommended. Rock screen required. Roll bar padding required, fire retardant padding recommended. Drive shaft (torque tube) must be fully enclosed. Drive shaft strap mandatory. 

Kill switch must be labeled and visible and easily reached by driver.

ELECTRONICS
No transmitting or listening devices in car or in pits. No electronic monitoring computer devices capable of storing or transmitting information except tach allowed on car. No electronic traction control devices allowed. 

FUEL SYSTEM
Racing fuel cell with bladder required. Check valve or overflow tube required. Overflow tube must be lower than tank on right side of tank.

FUEL
Methanol or Ethanol. No performance-enhancing additives allowed. No gasoline allowed.

WEIGHT
Weight jacks permissible.

Tires & Wheels
1. No softening or conditioning of tires allowed.
2. No recaps allowed.
3. Right rear: Hoosier dirt tire number 102-16-15-RC3, mounted on a maximum 18 inch rim.
4. Left rear: Any approved tire. Tires may be purchased from Trackside Racing Supplies. Call: (714) 895-1190 to order.
5. Wheels: No plastic or carbon fiber wheels.
6. Bead locks required on right rear.

FRAMES
No aluminum frames. Minimum wheelbase 84 inches.

SUSPENSION
No adjustable (from cockpit) shock absorbers allowed.

BRAKES
Minimum two-wheel, workable brakes (in board brakes allowed).

BODIES
All sprint cars must be of "sprint car" design in front.

ENGINE RULES
1. Maximum 360ci cast iron blocks only.
2. Heads can be aluminum or steel, 23 degrees angle and two valves per cylinder.
3. No down nozzles, no injection nozzle drilled directly into head and no computerized injection. Injectors must be individual stack per cylinder design and shall not exceed 2 3/16" inside diameter. If downsized stacks or a restrictor is used, there must be at least 3" of restriction to 2 3/16" I.D.
4. No overhead cams.
5. No superchargers or turbochargers.
6. Injectors to be 2 3/16 inside diameter (2 7/16 with 2 3/16 inside diameter restrictors okay).
7. No aluminum or titanium rotating parts.
8. ASCS gasket required, no appoxy ramp allowed on gasket.

IDENTIFICATION
1. Officially assigned numbers at least 18" high and 4" in width (10% Tolerance) must be neatly painted on both sides of tail section and on the nose piece.
2. Numbers must be clearly readable to scorers. Gold or silver not advisable unless outlined in contrasting color.

QUALIFYING
1. Each competitor will have two (2) laps on the clock.
2. If you are not in your assigned qualifying spot, spin, crash or have a mechanical problem during your qualifying attempt, you will have only one qualifying lap.

Starting Positions
1. Drivers are awarded starting positions in heat races based on their qualifying.
2. All heats and mains will be run partially or totally inverted.
3. Fast qualifier will start outside the last row in heat one. Second fast outside the last row in heat two. Third fast inside the last row in heat one, etc. If more heats are necessary, the progression will be carried further.
4. Line up for main event will be determined from the finishing order of the heat races. First place in heat one starts inside row one. First place in heat two starts outside row one. Second place in heat one starts inside row two, etc. If more heats are run the progression will be carried further. 
5. After the main event lineup is complete an inversion will be applied to the field, from the results of a pill draw, as specified by Series format.
6. Any driver failing to get a qualifying time, for any reason, will start at the rear of his heat.

Point System
See "Championship Points", General Rules. All drivers must join local association by second race to be eligible for local points!

PROTESTS
1. A protest in writing, by any owner or driver, on an approved Santa Maria Speedway protest form, along with $200.00 cash, may be filed with the Chief Steward within fifteen (15) minutes following the finish of the event. Protests will be settled by the "Protest Committee". If the protest is upheld, the $200.00 fee will be refunded. If the protest is denied, the $200.00 will go to the SMS Driveršs Benevolent Fund. In the event an engine tear-down is required, the only persons allowed at the tear-down will be the SMS Tech Inspectors and the car owner. Frivolous protests will be denied.

  • a. No protest will be accepted that is directed at a decision of an official, including but not limited to timing and scoring decisions, inspections and race procedure decisions.

  • b. Discussion as to official rulings, race procedures, etc. will be conducted with the driver only.

MISCELLANEOUS
1. No mirrors. ATV's are allowed but must be ridden responsibly.

LICENSING
1. Fees: Drivers - $42.00; Mechanics - $42.00; Owners - $42.00; Car Number - $42.00.
