VENEGAS NOW 8 FOR 9 IN SPEEDWAY CYCLE MAINS AT INDUSTRY SPEEDWAY
By Tim Kennedy

INDUSTRY, CA., Jul. 2 - Charlie "the Edge" Venegas lived up to his long-time nickname Wednesday night in front of 721 spectators at Industry Speedway in The Grand arena at Industry Hills Expo Center. The 41-year old San Bernardino resident and Industry track champion won his fourth Industry feature in a row and eighth in nine USA Speedway Cycle races at the track this season. It gave him 32 feature victories in 67 features at Industry since the start of the 2005 season. He increased his "batting average" from .467 to .477 in baseball terminology.

Venegas started from the inside slot in a five-rider, four-lap 500-cc Division 1 main. On the first start Buck Blair shot into the lead from the fourth gate position and led the opening lap over Venegas. However, Ricky Wells and Bobby Schwartz made contact and both riders fell in turn one. After one false start, in which several riders broke through the starting line restraining tapes, the referee ordered a complete restart. A gate mallfunction caused another restart. On the fourth attempt Venegas grabbed the lead entering the first turn and led Shawn McConnell, Wells and Blair. The only only position change occurred on lap 2 when 16-year old Wells passed McConnell for second. Venegas beat Wells by three leng'ths, with McConnell one length back and Blair fourth. Schwartz did not start because his cycle was disqualified for rolling into the tapes before the final restart.

J. C. Masters won the 500-cc Division 2 main event after taking the lead on the second lap from New Zealander Kim Stevens, the only female rider competing at the track this year. Bruce Marteney led all 4 laps for his first Division 3 (rookies) feature victory. The race had six starters, three at the starting gate and three 10-yards back in row two. Hugh Randolph, a 76-year old retired Los Angeles City Fire Department captain, finished fifth in the six rider field.

Two youth mains for riders under age 16 using 250-cc cycles went to Austin Novratil, a 13-year old eighth grader from Huntington Beach in a field of more experienced riders. Rocco Scopellite, 12, from Huntingtron Beach, took the 4-lap youth main for the three less experienced riders. With schools on vacation, a season-high seven pee-wee riders raced in two divisions based upon past experience. Nicky Reimer, 9, from Seal Beach, won his third pee-wee main at Industry this season. Nicholas Hazlip won his main on his first appearance on his 50-cc mini cycle.
