$1000 HOLLYWOOD HILLS WIN TO JASON TANNER
by Gary Jacob & Bob Ingram

Wingless 360 Sprint Cars, Mini Sprints, Street Stocks and Hobby Stocks

Pueblo San Felipe, NM….Oct 1.…After earlier capturing his heat race, Jason Tanner drove a Bill and Debbie Richards owned wingless 360 sprint car to victory in the feature action for the NMMRA sprint cars Saturday night at Hollywood Hills Speedway. Johnny Herrera was running a full straight behind Tanner when he broke and series point leader Kelly Dennison battled back from an early race spin to finish second ahead of Tanner’s teammate Jon Taylor. Taylor came from 12th and Larry Stoerkel ran fourth ahead of last row starter Jesse Baker from Grants. In the mini sprints, Derrick Ortega’s new car fell out of the heat race action, but ran away with the main event ahead of Randy Smith and female racer Jennifer Greenberg. Doing just double duty this week, Ron Frazier Jr was the street stock feature winner as that class improved to 15 car. Veteran Jim Willis made his season debut and ran second to Frazier after capturing a heat race. Ronnie Bell was third. The hobby stocks had a surprise winner as George Baisden from Grants made his first ever visit to the 3/8 mile clay oval and drove to a win ahead of heat winners Ron Leathem and Mike Mendoza. There were 25 sprint cars, 17 mini sprints and 15 each of the street stocks and hobby stocks.

The NMMRA format puts the teams with the best point averages in heat 3, the middle teams in heat 2 and the teams with the lowest averages in heat 1. Tanner won heat 3 ahead of Herrera, Robert Marfia and Dennison. Stoerkel captured heat 2 in front of Paul Whitehead, James High and Lubbock TX long tow Leighton Crouch. Kristi Smith was the heat 1 winner ahead of long time Aztec area racer L C Kesterson, Russell Gossett and Nick Rael, who debuted a new car. Street stock star Jay Pape got an opportunity to drive for former series champion Tom Ball, who has a shoulder injury. Pape rolled in the B Main that was won by Rael ahead of Jeff Brumfield Jr, Bo Baker, J Baker and Kesterson. K Smith missed the transfer in sixth. The feature got off to a wild start as Marfia got out of shape in the Charlie Fegan car and launched into the infield, doing a series of spectacular flips. He nearly collected one of the infield light poles. He was unhurt and Kesterson was allowed to join the action to leave a 20 car field for the restart. Jody Williams also escaped unhurt from a feature flip. Tanner was the feature winner. Herrera broke chasing him in second. Gossett ran second for a long time, but faded to a sixth place finish. Dennison battled back from his early spin to get second ahead of 12th starting Taylor. Stoerkel ran fourth and J Baker came from 19th to finish fifth ahead of Gossett, High, Crouch, J C Powell Jr, P Whitehead and Brumfield Jr.

In the mini sprints, Brian Perea broke in practice to end his night. Randy Smith won heat 1 over Jim Massey and John Massey with Greenberg in fourth. Lonnie Saiz outraced Jackson Cerklewski and Jordan Mattson in heat 2 as Ortega failed to finish A dozen of the 16 starters were racing at the checkered flag in the feature as Ortega ran away to the win ahead of R Smith, Greenberg, Cerklewski, Saiz, John Massey, Jim Massey, Devon Whitehead, Jerry Mosher and Mattson. The street stocks were given a dash and Joe Smithberger got that win ahead of young rookie Cameron Martin and Frazier. Frazier had beaten Santa Fe’s Smithberger in heat one with Grants racer Loren Haveland third in his first Hollywood Hills visit. Jeff Whyman crashed hard on the final lap of heat 1. Dan Harmon broke an engine in heat 2 when Willis beat Martin and Andy Tanner. Pape ran fourth in his normal street stock mount. Only six cars were running at the end of their feature with Frazier the winner ahead of Willis, Bell, Tanner, Haveland and another Grants racer Kevin Bodley. The first hobby stock heat went to Leathem ahead of Curt Neff and Phil York. Paul Jenicek made his Hollywood Hills debut in fourth. Mendoza outraced visitor Baisden in heat 2 with Frazier Jr in third. Nine of the 15 starters saw the checkered flag in the hobby stock feature as Baisden posted the win ahead of Leathem, Mendoza, York, Neff, Ray Munoz, Glenn Jaramillo, Dan Harmon and Dan Glass, who was making his 2005 debut.

Having gotten their season off to a late start, Hollywood Hills will race the next three weekends and will be the only dirt track in New Mexico still in action.
