FIRST 2005 WIN FOR TOUGH LUCK BRUCE DOUGLAS
by Gary Jacob

Wingless Sprint Cars

Ventura, CA..Sept 10...Suffering through a tough luck season that finds him in sixth place in points after several feature wins in 2004, Bruce Douglas survived a wild incident with five laps to run and captured Saturday night's 20 lap VRA Senior Sprint Car feature at Ventura Raceway. It was his first win in a dozen races in 2005. Douglas started on the pole of the small 13 car field after a third in his heat race, but he got sideways in turn 3 and was t-boned by point runnerup Ron Bach with five laps to run. Both went spinning, but Douglas kept his mount moving and was placed back in front for the restart. He nursed his damaged car to the checkered flag for the win and then had to be towed to his pit area. Third starter Bob Alderman ran second ahead of 7th starting Oren Prosser Sr. Point leader Wiley Miller spun in the lap 15 incident and had to battle back to a 7th, but stretched his point advantage to 855 points over Bach, whose night ended in the lap 15 tangle.

The 13 car turnout was the smallest of the year for this class and they were split into a pair of heat races. Miller won the first from an outside front row start as previous race winner Jim Porter came from 4th to finish second. Bach and Jeff Culver were 3rd and 4th. Outside front row starter Tim Moon won heat 2 as Douglas struggled to a third behind Alderman after starting on the pole. The main event inversion put Douglas and Bach on the front row ahead of Alderman, Porter, Moon and W Miller. Douglas and Bach race into the lead, but a tangle between Brian Kittle and Steve Stasa leave Stasa with a broken front end. Miler drove around Moon and Alderman to gain third behind Douglas and Bach. Culver got into the fence in turn 1 for a yellow with five laps to run. On the restart, Douglas gets sideways in turn 3 and slows. Bach t-bones him and both spin wildily with Miller stalling as he spins. Bach's car is hurt to the point that he cannot continue but Douglas drove through the wild incident and emerges with the lead. Despite a damaged front end, Douglas nurses the injuried machine over those final five rounds for his first win of 2005. Alderman runs second ahead of Prosser, Porter, Moon, Culver and a hard charging Miller. Ross Millar ran 8th. Moon is third in points, 520 behind Bach and 510 ahead of Alderman. Porter stands fifth, 335 ahead of Douglas, who was a DNS in the previous Senior Sprint event.

The Senior Sprint Cars return to action at Ventura on both Sept 17 and Sept 24.
