FIRST DIRT MODIFIED FEATURE WIN FOR 14 YEAR OLD STORMY SCOTT
by Gary Jacob

Unwinged Sprint Cars, Dirt Modifieds, Dirt Late Models,
 Street Stocks and Hobby Stocks

San Felipe Pueblo, NM....May 30.......Having earlier won his heat race, Robert Marfia Jr completed his perfect night at Hollywood Hills Speedway by racing to his first NMMRA unwinged sprint car feature win Sunday night. Rickey Hood rebounded from his broken engine leading the winged sprint car action on Saturday night to place second behind Marfia ahead of Bo Baker and Tom Ball. 14 year old Stormy Scott from Las Cruces missed all the winter action recovering from a broken leg suffered on a skiing vacation, but he was flying this weekend as he followed up his third place run on Saturday night with a $1000 win on Sunday night. This was his first feature win in the highly competitive Barnett's Harley Davidson dirt modified division. His twin brother Johnny Scott was the 2003 track champion at El Paso in their rookie dirt modified season and won both of the main events on the opening weekend of 2004 at Hollywood Hills. Farmington's Brandon Carley ran second ahead of Bumper Jones Sunday night. Both the unwinged sprint cars and dirt modifieds have special $10,000 track point funds for their Hollywood Hills action in 2004. Ralph Dutcher beat the busy Curt Barnett and Saturday night winner Butch Reid Sr in the dirt late model main event. That win paid $450. Aztec's Jesse Baldwin was the $425 winner in the street stock feature over Albuquerque's Ron Frazier Jr and Aztec racer Rex Higgins. Rick Boelter was the $350 winner in the hobby stock main event ahead of Steve Bonesteel and Randall Yates. The second night of the busy weekend drew 25 non winged sprint cars, 41 dirt modifieds, 11 dirt late models, 27 street stocks and 31 hobby stocks for a grand total of 135 cars.

Another windy night quickly produced dry slick racing conditions and Jason Tanner won the first heat for the unwinged sprint cars in the Norm Smith car ahead of Steve Copeland and Thomas Murray. Marfia won heat 2 from an outside front row start over 2003 rookie of the year Jeff Brumfield Jr and Tim Jones. Nick Rael led the first 3 laps of heat 3 before giving way to Hood. Hood wheeled the Joe Herrera car to the win ahead of Rael and Chris Faber. Last year's track champion Bo Baker led early in heat 4, but Tom Ball ended up with the win ahead of Bobby Seals and Baker. Both Russ Gossett and Rick Johnson were feature scratches to leave 23 cars in the lineup for the 30 lapper. Tanner had the pole for the main event, but suffered a broken rocker arm and proved to be a rolling roadblock before he could get off the track. Brumfield Jr took a quick lead over Rael and J C Powell Jr. Brumfield Jr led 9 laps before Rael took over with Hood charging from 10th to fourth behind Brumfield Jr and Marfia. Brumfield Jr pitted his smoking car and Bobby Seals tangled with Baker for a lap 15 yellow flag. Marfia Jr took the lead from Rael and Rael fell from contention with a spin. Rio Rancho's Marfia used lapped traffic to win by six lengths over Hood. Ball ran third ahead of Seals, Kelly Denison and rookies Jody Williams and Copeland. Powell Jr and Rael rounded out the top ten. In the special Hollywood Hills point listing, Baker is 5 points ahead of Seals and 8 ahead of Denison. For the entire traveling NMMRA schedule, Seals holds a 10 point lead over Baker and is 15 ahead of Denison. They return to Hollywood Hills for two nights of racing on June 11-12 along with the dirt modifieds and SCOA winged 410 sprint cars, then make their first venture into Arizona to race at Thunder Raceway in Show Low on June 19.

The dirt modifieds split 41 cars into six heat races with only the top 2 finishers in each moving up to the 30 lap A Main. Carley won the first heat over Show Low regular Max Sadler from Springerville Az and Richard Johnson. 19 year old Porter Smith beat Bumper Jones and J Scott in heat 2 while California transplant Mark McClarran from Albuquerque won heat 3 over Troy Treharn and Kyle Odom. McClarran was a regular at Merced Speedway before moving to New Mexico several years ago. S Scott won heat four with Butch Reid Jr second ahead of Chad Burson. Former Aztec champion J J Harpole beat Jeff Davis and Bobby Curran in heat 5 while Saturday night feature winner Curt Barnett outraced Toby Herring and Bo Martinez in heat 6. The A Main had 26 starters and Smith led first. On lap 7, McClarran took the top spot from Smith. Carley and S Scott worked their way into the 2-3 slots. The first yellow flag didn't fall until lap 20 when Smith spun in turn 3. McClarran led Carley, S Scott, Harpole and B Jones on this restart. Carley and S Scott both raced around McClarran and S Scott took the top spot coming off turn 4 from Carley on lap 22. The excited S Scott got his first win since leaving the street stock ranks with Carley second ahead of B Jones, Harpole, Herring, Luke Cortese from Fort Sumner, C Barnett, McClarran, Smith and Treharn. Show Low point leader Ed Beebe was 11th ahead of Eddie Farley and Sadler. After four races, B Jones holds a 6 point lead on Herring and is 16 ahead of J Scott.

The dirt late model count improved from Saturday's 8 cars to 11, but they still all raced in a single heat race. Butch Reid Sr won the heat race over Dutcher and Ron Frazier Jr. Dutcher got the main event win with C Barnett getting his second runnerup finish of the weekend. Saturday night winner Reid Sr ran third ahead of John Aragon, Eloy Romero, Deral Meek and Steve Suber. Albuquerque area racers Ron Frazier Jr, Andy Tanner and Rick Boelter ran 1-2-3 in heat 1 for the street stocks. Santa Fe's Joe Smithberger missed Saturday night, but won Sunday's 2nd heat ahead of Ray Hollingsworth and Dennis Spencer. Jay Pape charged from sixth to win heat 3 over Rex Higgins and former Aztec champion Allen Bradley. Baldwin was the feature winner ahead of Frazier Jr, R Higgins, Spencer, female Aztec star Melissa Farley, Henry Alvirdes, Andy Jenson Jr and Frank Powell Jr. Saturday night winner Ted Boettler was 9th ahead of double division racer Rick Boelter. For the second straight night, the hobby stocks ran their three heat races without a yellow flag. Shawn Kapinski beat Steve Bonesteel and Mike Kapinski in heat 1 while John Cruickshank beat Randall Trujillo and Dan Harmon in heat 2. R Boelter beat Ronnie Bell and Saturday night winner J R Bonesteel in heat 3. After a fourth on Saturday night, R Boelter got the Sunday night win ahead of S Bonesteel, Yates, S Kapinski, J Bonesteel, Randy Carter, Trujillo, Bell and Robert Kapinski.
